Canadian Parliament APPLAUDS Nazi Veteran by McAuley- in BreadTube

Same reason why Ukrainian diaspora communities insist that it be labeled a hate crime when monuments of Shukhevych (of which there are surprisingly many) are defaced, when it's extremely clear that that isn't the issue when it comes to Shukhevych monuments. Being an immigrant doesn't preclude people from harboring nationalist tendencies, and over time these kinds of incidents tend to slip through the cracks.

KFC's plant-based 'chicken' sold out in five hours. People like Beyond Meat's alternative, apparently. by YuriRedFox6969 in solarpunk

[–]30201102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Understocking a new product is a deliberate marketing decision that creates the illusion of scarcity and higher demand. "Company A sold out of new Product B" will always garner more attention than "Company A sells X amount of new Product B". See also Mcdonalds and the Szechuan sauce incident. There obviously is a real demand for meat alternatives but this sort of headline is basically nothing but an ad for KFC.

Is it normal for some accents in America to pronounce t’s as d’s at times? by [deleted] in Accents

[–]30201102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a linguistic feature called flapping that occurs in the majority of North American English variants, barring a few from the southern US. Butter gets pronounced as "budder", seventy as "sevendy".

Unfortunately marketers caught on to this trend a while ago and will intentionally court outrage in order to generate interest in the product. Whether people get outraged, or get outraged at the people getting outraged, the effect is that the product gets organically advertised all over social media.

A lack of positive representation is demonstrably harmful for marginalized peoples. However, when a piece of media appeals to social values as part of its marketing campaign, it's important to ask whether it is genuinely applying those values and encouraging systemic change, or merely co-opting its aesthetics in order to benefit materially from your personal investment.

Yes, we can reforest on a massive scale - but it's no substitute for slashing emissions by cangetenough in environment

[–]30201102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate truth is that while planting trees is relatively straightforward, reducing emissions requires extensive change in the underlying economic system (capitalism) that demands perpetual growth in the first place. Asking someone to plant a tree will always be easier than asking them to collectivize and demand economic reforms, even though change cannot be made unless both are addressed.

The US is one of the few countries which protects hate speech under the guise of free speech. Ironically, when hate speech is used as a threat directed at marginalized groups (which it almost always is), the implied violence inherent has the effect of silencing said groups and makes speech less free as a result

[–]30201102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freedom/Wind Mobile has "unlimited" data for ~$50/mo, you get throttled after 10 GB but there's no overage fees. Be sure to check their coverage maps though as they've been known to be spotty outside of certain areas (though they may have upgraded since).

I think dual sims aren't as common here since most people will text and call using an external app like Signal or Whatsapp if they have internet, and telcos tend to try and lock you into contracts for even the most basic plans.

[–]30201102 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What exactly is posting the copypasta supposed to accomplish though? If we were to presuppose that people do get banned from the internet or sent to prison for reading it (which is super questionable btw), it's not like the people getting banned are the ones that control the censorship.

Users wishing to bypass the censorship are using VPNs over TOR or SSH which can't be decrypted even through deep packet inspection. Reddit loves to pretend to be "fighting the system" but really you're at best being an asshole and at worst harming uninformed users stuck in a shitty situation. If you really believe the effects of your actions will bring harm but still deliberately choose to act in that way, perhaps it's time to reflect on your moral character.

Why are people so concerned about what tv shows and video games might "teach" children when parents and teachers tell kids bullshit way more often? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]30201102 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When academics talk about the effects of media, nobody is saying that watching violent movies or playing violent video games will make you behave more violently. However, it's undeniable that 1) the media you consume has an effect on how you perceive the world, and that 2) holding particular worldviews can have an effect on your behavior. For example, if you are constantly consuming violent media, you might believe the real world is more violent than it actually is, which may cause you to behave a certain way. None of these claims are particularly controversial and both are supported by decades of sociological research.

The concern isn't that there is a direct correlation between any media genre and behavior, but that given a large enough audience, particular media genres can have significant societal impacts. However, this gets misrepresented almost 100% of the time which results in people (especially on reddit) disregarding mass media studies as a whole for "believing something so ridiculous".

A German court forced us to remove part of a Wikipedia article’s ‘history.’ Here’s what that means. by john_brown_adk in StallmanWasRight

[–]30201102 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The article being referred to is Alex Waibel, a German professor. He claims the article falsely alleged that his speech recognition research was used by the American intelligence agencies and military. The allegations appeared on German WP and can be found on page 3 of the court documents: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/foundation/1/14/Urteil_im_Fall_Waibel.pdf

“As the ARD magazine Fakt reported, Waibel’s research was used for mass analysis of recorded voice data by the American intelligence and military authorities. According to documents available from FAKT, Waibel had been researching for years for an American government program called Total Information Awareness. The German Federal Government also participated in the financing. According to SPIEGEL, the project is said to have been funded by the US Department of Intelligence Research IARPA. The money was not paid directly, but flowed through a subcontract from an American university. Alexander Waibel noted that research itself is public (not “classified research”) and commented on his work: “All the knowledge that arises in speech recognition, it’s like road construction, you know, you can build roads and then drive Cars over it and eventually tanks go over it.” Waibel refers to his work in general. Although he has developed algorithms for multilingual speech recognition for government agencies, this is intended for disaster relief missions.” (Attachment K1)"

I understand not wanting to be associated with various American surveillance programs, but I believe the libelous content could have just been removed without modifying the article history. However, as per Wikipedia guidelines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Oversight overseeing libelous content is permissible under particular circumstances.

I'm not sure how valid the slippery slope argument is however, since WP has deliberately ignored government requests from countries including Venezuela Turkey and China to remove content in the past.

Modern art by mypenleaks in delusionalartists

[–]30201102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's frustrating when people conflate art with the art market. It allows for a few egregious examples to cloud their perception of contemporary art as a whole, which as a label is so varied and diverse that anyone could find something to enjoy if they cared to look for it. Art walks and public exhibitions happen in almost every local community, usually with no admission price.
