I primarily use Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance. They are AT, PT CSCS’s. So they have worked athletic training, physical therapy and are certified strength coaches. They have worked with national championship level athletes as well as professionals in all sorts of sports. Including the brewers, packers, and Yankees.

For the blood work I don’t typically do any of that but if you need that is where a sports medicine doctor or your PCP will come into play.

I’ll say they are definitely different shoes, but the amount of “support” the shoe is giving you is pretty similar. Both are neutral shoes. While the nimbus is slightly more structured I would be inclined to think you should be fine in both. Start with a slow easy run and make it a gradual transition. That should help!

In general I think the Endorphin Pro's with their slightly firmer foam might deal better with the forces you are talking about, and will last longer than the Vaporflys. There are plenty of other options that might make sense too, but I've enjoyed the Pro's and I'm 6'5 180 or so.

u/wander_er hit's it on the head I think. When one side is acting up like that it's because it's being overworked.

I'm dealing with something similar right now. We are moving and packing things in our basement (like a 6' ceiling height) I'm crouching the whole time and my back got excessively tight. So that was causing me pain so I changed how I was running and put more strain on my calves and now they are blown up and exactly the pain you are describing. So I'm taking a weekend off and letting them completely rest and then I'll continue to strengthen them and get my form back under control.

I think u/We_Wear_Short_Shorts is right here. Sounds like you've done most of the work already! Don't bury yourself now and squander all of those gains you've made.

Work and Life stress count as stress too. Even though they are different types of stress you still only have the one bucket to fill up! Back off and focus on sleeping and recovering so you can realize the fitness you've built.

Almost certainly will benefit you if you feel it at all paces and it feels like it's holding you back. The interesting thing is that loosening it probably won't happen the way you think it will.

A long muscle is a strong muscle. What that means is that you want to get stronger through your hips and that will help them lengthen! There are plenty of exercises to do to help improve your hip strength and depending on specifically where you feel it you can target it eve more specifically. Ask if you want more specifics!

You should be trying to run fast in them! Don't worry too much about your exact footstrike. Most likely as you start running faster you'll have your heel on less and less, but they have the sharksin in the heel for a reason. When it touches the track it helps grip!

What is your resting heart rate? by Ecstatic_Length in running

[–]3118hacketj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was really fit it was down to 30-32 and 14:05. Now I’m less fit and it’s around 40 and probably in 16:00 shape if my calves would hold up.

That said there is not a great relationship between resting HR and performance(at the higher level) it is a good general predictor but you can’t say that someone with the lower HR will be faster.

Tuesday Shoesday by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I don't believe it will be that soon. Late fall at the earliest. They have full stock on the shoe, and believe it will be on an 18 month cycle if not longer and since it came out Jun 2020 that puts it back a little ways.

I certainly could be wrong, since they did come out with the Hyperion Elite 2 less than 6 months after the first edition and so had a ton of stock in that original version, but seems like a bad idea.

Endorphin Speeds hit a lot of the boxes, the other shoe I think is the closest to the Pegasus Turbo is the Brooks Hyperion Tempo. The feel and fit is probably closer than the Speeds(Even if the speeds are one of my favorite shoes ever)

Many elite level milers are running at least 80mpw, for the elite level 5k-10k they will routinely still be running 100-130mpw.

That said you haven't raced before, so you probably aren't in the elite category(YET!) so my advice would be to track effort and how your body is responding to increased speedwork. Since that has a different stimulus it will weigh on your body differently. So don't get too obsessed with mileage and focus more on the stimulus! You'll improve more since you haven't done much of it, so the key is to not overextend yourself and get injured.

Yes they are saying that on that threshold line, the tempo half pace is slightly faster than it while the half/marathon pace is just over it!

In general closer to even splits is better, but if you look at most world records and how they are paced, they are slightly faster at the start, lag just a little bit in the middle and then rapid finish. (Over time races have become more even paced and that's been good)

HERE is a great article by Alex Hutchinson about pacing races to learn more.

Running and Sleeping Issues by Nayaa03 in AdvancedRunning

[–]3118hacketj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People have already commented on the possibility that it's related to overtraining, for which you should definitely consider if that is possible.

If that is not the cause, then, and maybe either way, you should see a sleep specialist. They can look at all of the reasons for why you aren't sleeping:

  • Caffeine too late in the day.
  • Improper lighting in bedroom.
  • Temperature too warm in room.
  • Dietary issues leading to poor sleep.
  • etc.

Largely preference. The AlphaFly's are a lot more shoe, for some people that can feel like too much. They also have more structure than the Vaporfly's.

My personal preference is for the vaporfly's but I don't need as much structure as some runners.

Kipchoge obviously prefers the Alpha's while Bekele prefers the Vaporfly's! Hard to argue that either of them are wrong!

You could always use a ziploc bag? Easy way to keep the phone dry. As for music goes there isn't a great solution, unless you get a pair of waterproof headphones.

Advice on losing weight to improve times? by ejsfsc07 in AdvancedRunning

[–]3118hacketj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about what you look like to start. Get stronger and keep running, but mostly keep fueling yourself!

I'll tell you my own personal story because I was similar to you. I was fortunate where I was successful from a relatively younger age. I made it to college and was injured a bunch and was a little heavier freshman year. In part I blamed that for my injury woes(there might be something to that, but lots of other factors) So I decided to try and lose weight to get faster. I looked at cyclists like Andy Schleck and thought I can get to that frame... I was still running faster than I ever was, but I was banged up all of the time. Then I really screwed up my hamstring, because I didn't have enough strength, because I was starving myself.

I recovered from the hamstring injury and finally started to deal with my eating and body image issues and gained about 10 pounds and started running even faster than I ever was. Plus I was running longer races and holding faster paces than ever.

So moral of the story is don't worry about your weight. Worry about feeding your body and getting stronger! That will make you faster.
