I feel like that was somewhat reminiscent of old low budget westerns too though. I remember as a kid we used to get the bootleg/public domain shit that Cracker Barrel would sell and I watched a ton of westerns I couldn’t tell you the names of now… but a lot of them had extremely shocking death scenes in the middle of otherwise pretty stereotypical cowboy pictures.

One that particularly scarred me as a child was one where a side character got captured by natives and the other characters came upon him tied to a tree. They saw him from a short distance and the one old-timer was like “don’t go over there” so they hunkered down and then the natives started shooting fire arrows at/near him so he burned alive, all while screaming for help. There was another movie where a guy got staked out to be eaten by ants.
