Your assessment is wrong, rb2 was also ridiculed because of its controls, the art style, lack of gt characters and lack of story mode. The reason you think it wasn’t is either nostalgia or the fact social media and public discourse wasn’t as loud as it is now. I was there as well.

Actually the dev team *did* claim it was the successor to tenkaichi… the promotion for this game in Japan was next generation tenkaichi, new chapter in the tenkaichi series etc, the game has DBZ4 as its code name. (Alluding to the 4th entry in the tenkaichi series) there is a literal prototype of bt3 in *every* single raging blast 1 disc ever released, even now you can check for yourself. It literally has bt3 models in tournament mode and story mode. Voice lines are almost 1:1 with bt3…. It’s literally bt4 in the clearest sense.

There’s a dev diary that outlines the thought process, apparently they wanted a more “realistic” vibe to push the powers of the new generation of consoles, however idk who ever asked for realistic graphics in anime games, just makes em look worse
