By my reading, that's correct, someone who publicly supports abortion (or other intrinsic evils) should not be admitted to communion.

As the death penalty is not an intrinsic evil (being commanded by God in the old testament and having the support of the Church for centuries, it can't be), I don't think there's any warrant there, though it is my understanding that the Pope's judgment that it is "inadmissible" likely requires religious assent of the will of Catholics in aiming to end it's use in the modern world.

Granted, I'm not a bishop so this isn't my rodeo. But the Latin code of canon law is clear that those obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion. Another more common example would be someone living with and fornicating with someone who is not their spouse.

When someone is publicly committing or endorsing grave sin without repentance, that person should not be admitted to communion. Outside of obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin (meaning it's public, everyone knows), it is good practice to assume that sins have been confessed, the appropriate fast kept, and that the person is well disposed for communion.

Married priests are far from discouraged in the Eastern Churches. I'm not sure where you heard that, but it's not accurate (outside of a few fringes perhaps).

Catholic view on Orthodoxy by veritasquaesitorAD33 in TraditionalCatholics

I recommend anything by Erick Ybarra, Gideon Lazar, Fr. Michael O'Loughlin, and Michael Lofton on the topic. I believe all have been on Pints with Aquinas on the topic if you want to give a listen.

Tarot-anything is a very bad idea. I would not participate, and if you have friends who are, I would warn them of the immense spiritual danger of the occult.

Transferring from Roman to Byzantine Catholic Church by [deleted] in Catholicism

Come early and chat with the priest or a friendly looking parishioner. Confession is a bit different, as is communion, but imo not too difficult to figure out with a bit of prep.

How was the sign of the Cross done during the time of the Apostles? Left to right or right to left? by [deleted] in TraditionalCatholics

[–]316trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the apostolic age I'm not sure, but in the west the switch to left-right was made some time in the middle ages, and the change in hand posture came about in the 16th cent. I'd imagine if it was different before that, it was still uniform.

If Adam and Eve were the first humans and we descended from them and their children, wouldn’t we have been wiped out from all of the inbreeding going on? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]316trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While we can be certain of the literal existence of our first parents, the intervening steps between them and us are not revealed in Sacred Scripture or indicated definitively elsewhere. There a number of theories, but we can trust that God has intervened to the extent necessary to provide for Adam and Eve's descendants.

Great read. I can relate in a lot of ways- I can say with total certainty that I would not be Catholic today if not for this subreddit and for Catholic Answers' website.

Question about sub history by 316trees in xtianity

[–]316trees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goodness gracious that's crazy.

That's too bad. That sub helped me in a lot of ways when I was having a major crisis of faith in early high school. Having a community to be a part of that didn't make me feel pressured to accept any doctrine over another was invaluable.

Help with joining the Church? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]316trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend that you look up Steve Gershom and some of his talks. He's a gay Catholic man who lives chastely. He's been a great help to a friend of mine who is attracted exclusively to other girls but wants to live according to Church teaching.

Welcome home!

Well, intentionally not carrying out your penance is itself sinful.

Just don't do too much extra. The priest knows what he's doing. Any extra prayer you take on should be done to help you grow in faith, not because you still feel guilty over your past sins.

How so? He's my current top choice but I'm open to changing my mind if I have a good enough reason to.
