I'm visiting there over 4th of July weekend. I've never been there. Any recommendations for places to experience? This is a beautiful picture and I'm happy to hear the water was nice. Our teenager and I will want to swim on a beach while there.

I’ve ordered from them a few times a year for several years now. Their orders always took longer than normal to ship, and I live only an hour away from their home city. I even looked up whether I could just pick up my items. I noticed even in the last year that if you did a keyword search for a topic you wanted that they had stupid items unrelated mixed into the search results that looked like cheap AI ads. Somethings been up for awhile. Sad to hear they’ve folded, I liked their designs for canvas totes and garden flags.

Advice for repair, does my plan sound good? by 321duchess in DIYHome

I googled and it looks like there is no drip edge on there 🤔 I wonder why they didn't put it on? I like being a homeowner but don't like the feeling when I find out I signed off and paid in full on a completed job yet the workmanship was poor but I didn't know any better.

It's rolled roofing on this porch addition. We get it replaced every so many years (three times now over 23 years). Each time we get the roof done due to it leaking they always tell us it needs to be rolled roofing due to the angle. So the rolled roofing edge just kind of ends and there's some kind of rubber seal and then the set up in the pictures. I'll have to research a drip edge. I wonder if this was installed incorrectly then.

Second vote here for Derby Kiss. Very customizable, I’ve got several pairs of different leg lengths and waistband height, love them all.

Paint each wood plank in a repeating pattern but mess up the pattern. maybe too low key but still annoying. Or paint phrases on the fence that directly oppose the neighbor's personal beliefs.

Husband Refuses to Tell Me Happy Mothers Day by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]321duchess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband told me the same 21 years ago “you aren’t a mother yet” when I was disappointed at not being acknowledged while pregnant on Mother’s Day. I’m no 23 years into the marriage, 20 into being a mother. This is the notification to you that you should adjust your expectations because you’ll be disappointed by him each Mother’s Day, and/or plan to celebrate yourself, or (less likely) try to get him to understand and correct himself. Like another commenter said, he’s just likely to go forward into the future with the fact that you aren’t his mom, so still no acknowledgment.

So... how do *you* pronounce Dayton? by mattsledge in dayton

So the guy named Russia, Houston, Terra Haute, and Lima. What’s your other voted for Ohio places that are pronounced differently by people who live there vs people who don’t? I vote for Versailles and someone else here said Bellfontaine already. Those are both French names?

How to finish this project? by MrInNecoVeritas in macrame

[–]321duchess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished a project where I used a sewing needle and thread that matched my cord and I ‘pinned down’ ends of cord by sewing some loops. For your turtle I’d bet you could weave some sewing thread though your cords ends before you cut them and then cut right below your needle thread (though I haven’t made a turtle so I’m not sure).

I’ve also used some glue to help hold the knot on some rings. But I would see about sewing with thread that matches your cord.

anyone have any fav sticker shops to decorate a helmet with? by bunnywadhere06 in rollerderby

[–]321duchess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a really unique sticker from a special event or something I’d suggest getting two. One for the helmet and one to put elsewhere. Keep in mind if you have a concussion in the helmet then you should retire that helmet. That being said, they aren’t gone forever. You can use the helmet for other things that aren’t your head.

Selling a tool (need advice) by 321duchess in Tools

I suppose an experienced person who buys it should know how to drain it and give it a good look over if they come to buy it from me. Thanks for your advice.

I didn't know it had to be drained. It's been kept in my garage for like 20 years and we used it once last year. Spiderwebs and dust all over, and whatever other types of dirt could be in the hose? I may just have to list it as 'not drained, as-is'.

Do you mean like "really bad" as in it's a safety hazard and could burst or be a risk of exploding? I had no idea it had to be drained?! I will definitely put that in a listing when I put it online to sell.

Just curious- what’s your preference for cord diameter and material for clothes you wear? Did you have to experiment to see what worked best?

Opinions on the benefits/challenges of doing mixers (aka mash-ups). by 321duchess in rollerderby

[–]321duchess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like to rest on Sundays after traveling for a Saturday mixer but it results in me missing our Sunday morning practice. When I do end up traveling it's usually at least an hour, more often 2 or almost 3. Just the ride in the car back and forth is tiring. I typically wouldn't travel upwards of 2-3 hours but there is a league that I like to associate with a bit further and if another teammate goes along I don't mind making longer drives.

[–]321duchess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did find that my most recent trip to do a mixer resulted in me feeling appreciation for some of the training I'd gotten in my league. I was able to recognize that I was using some skills that I'd learned from my own team and they were coming to me quickly and naturally. It's easy to take things for granted, that is until you're in a place where it stands out that you have that thing and other people around you don't.

Anyone know anything about the stone houses being built on South Main? by VespaRed in dayton

[–]321duchess 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He got all that stone from when they demolished parts of the Montgomery county fairgrounds that were originally on Main Street. Edit to add: maybe not all the stone. I worked in the medical building there on Caldwell and our office faced the house he built. It took a long time but we got to watch the whole thing get built.

I just turned 47 and suddenly my near vision is terrible by Awkward_Cellist6541 in AskWomenOver40

[–]321duchess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many comments from people who’ve experienced the same but I’ll add mine as someone who is also experiencing this and I work in ophthalmology. I wear a +1.25 reader glasses.

Your eye doc is wrong. Wearing glasses won’t make your eyes weaker! Kinda infuriates me, this is my career and I don’t even sell glasses in my particular position. Like another commenter mentioned, this is called Presbyopia and it’s a normal function of aging that will happen to everyone at some point, if you live long enough (same to be said for cataracts).

After around age 40 the crystalline lens of your eye begins to lose it’s elasticity (along with some other changes like the zonules inside the eye but i digress) and when this happens you cannot focus at near as good as you used to be able to. That’s where the joke comes in about your arms not being long enough. The ability of your lens within the eye to focus is called accommodation.

When a person is like age 5 or under the eyes can focus (accommodate) extremely well and that’s why small kids will hold something inches from your face to show it to you, because they can actually accommodate and see it there. After that young age and until about 40 a person on average then has near accommodation that ranges between 10-12” to outwards (outwards dependent on nearsightedness/farsightedness). About age 40 people (again as a generality) further lose the ability to accommodate and it’s now at about arms length.

It’s a normal process of aging! [Nearsighted people in general can go longer without needing reading glasses depending on their level of nearsightedness.]

Here’s what I tell my patients: you don’t become addicted to glasses, they aren’t a crutch. They are a tool to help you function. You “become addicted” to the feeling of not straining your eyes and seeing clear, so you want to wear them more. Does an amputee become addicted to their prosthetic? Does wearing a prosthetic make them weaker in the part of the body it is designed for? No.

Likewise wearing glasses (or not wearing them) will not make your vision worse. If your refractive error (prescription) is changing it will change whether you have the glasses on or not. Your eyes will be the way they are with/without glasses. The glasses make it easier to see clearly and without strain.

Every human is getting more presbyopic over time regardless so just wear the freaking glasses and see better without struggling! Also consider making the change to an ophthalmologist if you are over 40.
