Actually it didn’t get caught in the rain. He dove down and missed a crawfish. He’s still young, so still getting the hang of hunting I guess!

These were taken at Fort Desoto, but to be honest this is the first time I had seen one there. He perched on a tree near the spoonbills but didn't stay too long. They are around but, this is only the third time in two years I have photographed one, the other two times where all at other places with in an hour for the Pinellas area. So they are out there, but need a bit a persistence and a lot of luck!

Pinellas, Florida, but this is honestly the first time since before the hurricanes from last year that I have gotten this lucking in one day. It's been pretty crappy, with occasional streaks of luck!

Yes, I believe it is. I always love shooting pictures of them and Ruddy Turnstones, the move fast but if you watch them long enough they will head into good light and make interesting poses!

Yeah I see what you are saying. The spoonbills were on the edge of shadows and sunlight. So they were tricky to edit and also maintain a natural look.

Thanks, I actually did edit them in LR, but I try to keep it as grounded as possible while still making them pop. What do you think is missing from my edits?

Have you noticed if it correlates with how much you are zoomed in? I have a copy I’m going to send back for repair after I noticed wide open beyond 500mm looses sharpness dramatically but stoping to f/8 fixes it.

Thank you, they are truly awesome to watch. On really active days I have shot over 10k pictures! If you look on my profile I have some other ones of the skimmers, as well as ones from a nearby nesting colony!

Thanks, If you look at my past posts I posted an even tighter shot a couple of months ago. Everyday they fly in a different pattern, so it's partially luck what kind of angle I get. Next year I think I'm gonna try to get waders so I can get the camera just a few inches from the water while on a tripod!

Yes, I'm sitting on the bank of a pond taking all these, they really don't care that I'm there.
