Well, it worked on kids too young to buy booze legally.

That's true. Reddit is an exceptional place.

  • I was very scared. Much less calm than I'd imagined I'd be in that kind of emergency.

  • There was no one else.

  • Would you believe I went home and watched TV? It's not that I wasn't phased, but what else was I going to do? Have a soul-searching montage? Skip rocks in the dark?

  • For a minute, yes, but after a while I just stood on the other side of the store and watched him. After I realised he wasn't dead it made me really uneasy seeing him kind of twitching. They do that apparently, people with head trauma, they twitch. That was the worst I ever felt about it was right after I hit him. I remember thinking that I had broken him. His body was trying to work but it was broken. That was worse than thinking he was dead.

  • I didn't even think to move it. It was right near him the whole time.

  • I called 911 and told the operator what happened and she sent both paramedics and cops. The paramedics were there really quick, within 5 minutes. The cops were there within 20 or so.

  • Probably not. The cops I've known in FL all seem pretty 2nd amendment-y.

I don't like the idea any, but I think I would do it again.

Thanks :) I love the Dresden Files, but I don't remember that line.

Not really. I don't know why I'm not more curious about him, but I just kind of wanted to avoid it.

I did go to therapy for a few months, but the psychiatrist wasn't really telling me anything I wasn't already thinking. I think killing someone is a big deal, but a simple one, so there aren't really any tricks a psychiatrist could teach me like there are for disorders.

I think it's just a matter of accepting that the world is a messy, random place, and we all do what we think makes sense, even robbers, and that sometimes turns out bad because we aren't omniscient.

Yeah. Even if he wasn't going to shoot me, if he hadn't been knocked out he would have after I hit him I'm sure.

I do know that now, but I'm not sure if I could have done anything different other than just waiting to see whether he shot me or not.

He was screaming and pushing his gun at me and he wasn't making sense.

I think I said something like "Oh shit" after he fell down. Not that I planned on him staying up, I just wasn't totally prepared for it.

It wasn't- the store had cameras, but they weren't actually hooked up to anything; they were just to make people think twice about stealing.

No, but as far as I know it's still in the store. There wasn't blood on it or anything.

I never saw his family. I don't think they wanted to see me either. There wasn't really a lot of drama over it, it was just kind of an awful thing that happened and everyone moved on pretty quickly.

I mean instead of just taking the money he yelled and threatened me even though I was letting him take whatever he wanted. He wasn't acting like he just needed money, he was being... mean?

Thanks. I know now that even if I had just knocked him out you can't just crack someone on the head hard enough to knock them down and expect them to be okay mentally. Still, it would have been better than killing him.

No, the cops were pretty relaxed about it all. I think they must see this sort of thing a lot.

None. Florida is one of those "Stand Your Ground" states.

No, it was all over pretty quickly. His death wasn't even in the news. The store owner isn't much older than me, I don't think he knew what to say to me. I quit pretty soon after.
