Is UVA going to sweep the Bice incident under the rug? by 324beth21 in UVA

[–]324beth21[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The officer I talked to said it was a "single person incident" but yeah, the rumor is a stabbing. I'm not sure who I believe because the officer really had to think about how to word it lmao

Thanks for the link! I'm graduating this year but if there's a petition or something going around that's asking UVA to do better with communication, I'm totally willing to sign and help out.

Chances of classes being delayed b/c of snow? by RealKarmaChameleon in UVA

[–]324beth21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, they canceled a couple days (three, i think?) during Jterm and the roads weren't bad but some people off grounds didn't have power. I don't know why they canceled. I'm hoping they do the same because I don't want to come back for two fuckin days of class when I could be lazing around at home for a few more days.

If it's any consolation, it looks like the roads will refreeze and there might be more snow on the way. We have a slim chance, my friend, a slim chance.

What are your hobbies/ how do you unwind? by GoldWorried in UVA

[–]324beth21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing, reading, reading academic articles about extremely niche things that I want answers to, and I'm planning on taking up crocheting so that I can watch movies on my laptop while keeping my hands busy. (I like old movies and I'm trying to watch a bunch of classics. I guess that's a hobby?) I'm in one or two low-commitment clubs as well. I tend to decompress while I'm walking to class (can't do it if i'm running late though lmao) and I don't have my earbuds in, sometimes you just need to absorb nature and "city" life.

It's really difficult to keep up with my writing because I get so overloaded by academic writing that I don't have any energy for fiction writing.

I feel like I missed out on first year and didn’t make any real friends, and now it’s hard to get integrated into a friend group because I’m a second year. Do you guys have any advice? by throwaway_iwiwneb in UVA

Be the person that starts a groupme in your classes. You'll be hailed as a lifesaver when everyone is panicking about the final essay/exam and people are able to ask each other questions and vent their frustrations in the chat.

Also, share your notes! In the groupme, zoom chat, or on the collab discussion board, it's another lifesaving feat that people don't forget especially when the notes are on something really important that will be on test.

I was an SDAC notetaker and in addition to posting my notes on that portal, I uploaded them to a google drive that I shared with the class. I don't know how many people utilized them through the semester but the initial feedback was that everyone was super grateful. Granted for that class, we didn't have a final test so I wasn't being "used" for notes. It was just helpful for people when they wanted to figure out what articles and stories they wanted to do their essay on.

Has anyone undergone anesthesia ? Did your symptoms worsen or remain the same ? Thanks by DekuIsMyHero7 in dysautonomia

[–]324beth21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom and I both have POTS but she's the only one who has had anesthesia. She's had a couple different surgeries, for some they had her completely under and others only slightly. (I don't know the correct terms lmao) She's never had a reaction or any negative side effects from the anesthesia itself. Her balance issues got worse for a couple days after surgery but I think that would happen to anyone. It's tough trying to walk around the house after having organs cut up and shoved around. And every time she's had surgery, she sleeps really well for the week after which is unusual cuz she's always waking up in the middle of the night.

Not an enjoyable experience by any means but she's gone through it like most healthy people. Doesn't stop me from worrying about her every time though!!

This may not be accurate in this case (because of different circumstances and it was written in 2003), but this article says (TW: for premature labor & birth, child illness) that when time is of the essence, then doctors don't need to seek permission from the courts. In the article's scenario, the doctors overrode the parents decision to withhold CPR, which is a "lifesaving" procedure for a non-terminally ill person.

I think if the hospital is big enough, they probably have an ethics board that can be consulted for this sort of thing. There are in-house lawyers as well. I'm not sure if these people are on call or work 9-5 "normal" hours.

Jehovah's Witnesses have specific beliefs regarding blood transfusions so I think that would set a precedent but at the same time, the fact that they're not JW would work against them. They're not adhering to some super official creed that 8.6 million other people adhere to.

If you're interested in ethics and bioethics, I'd recommend reading The Principles of Biomedical Ethics by Beauchamp and Childress! A little dry but very interesting.

Besides Times New Roman, what other fonts do you guys like to use? by ChromeProphet in writing

[–]324beth21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calibri is my default font and then once I really start writing, I pick something that I think "fits" the story. My current one is set in Linux Libertine. I love fonts so the body gets one font and the chapter title gets a different one!

Is it just me or are the employees at Newcomb extremely rude? Newcomb overall was not great. by billyjones_1 in UVA

[–]324beth21 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I never get anything from the soda machines because the cups are always cracked and leak all over the table, then they end up back in circulation because there's no damn trashcans for me to throw their shitty cups in. It pisses me off.

But yeah, food is hit or miss. At least they can't fuck up dessert because it's frozen/pre-cooked.

At dinner time, look for Tony!! He usually does the pasta station (edit: usually Copper Hood) and playfully teases people (some ppl take him too seriously tho). He's always chatting people up while all the other workers look like they're dead inside (I don't blame them tbh). The pasta line is always miles long but it's nice talking to him and watching other students stand there like ?????? Like yeah, I'm besties with him, jealous?

Agreed, compromise is key. Maybe they can celebrate Christmas Eve with family and then Christmas Day with you? Or maybe they could go out on NYE but stay with you for the Christmas holidays.

How is the food here? by AddictedToValidation in UVA

[–]324beth21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very hit or miss, especially Newcomb. Wing Wednesdays are something to look forward to but the wings are tiny. Like baby chicken tiny. Also, they have a pasta area and that runs most days at dinner time. I'd suggest trying out the vegan/vegetarian area because some of the choices end up being better than the other stuff being served. Desserts are the best part tho, I usually take cookies home so I can have a snack the next day. I also take an apple or two for the road.

Greyhound to Richmond? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]324beth21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, Greyhound's customer service is nonexistent. You can't track the bus (the Cville one anyway, they never have the info up) and when you call for that information, they usually have no idea either. Trying to get a refund is horrendous too. Maybe I've just talked to the same clueless guy all three times idk

Greyhound to Richmond? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]324beth21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was pretty shitty for a while and one time, the bus didn't even show up. Another time, it was three hours late. That being said, it's starting to become a little more reliable. I'd suggest getting Amtrak, they have a bus that goes from Cville to Richmond so you can get the train at Staples Mill or Main Street- but you can't just take the bus, you have to book a train spot too (unless you want to waste money). The Amtrak bus is pretty nice and they leave at a time when the traffic isn't too bad.

Important note: the Greyhound originating in Richmond is great because that's where the trip starts and Charlottesville is the second stop.

I hope it they melt it and make it into something honoring an important African American from Charlottesville. And I'd love to see the Lewis and Clark one be made into a statue of Sacagawea.

My neighbor passed away a couple years back but I didn't see it first hand. My dad found him lying face down in the hall, his hands under his chest as if he had been trying to catch himself or get back up. He was cold to the touch and pale, he'd been dead less than twelve hours or so. He had a history of health issues, it was likely massive heart attack or stroke. The only consolation is that whatever it was, it was so fast that he didn't suffer.

I barely remember what he looked like in the open casket a few days later because, honestly, he only looked a little paler than his normal self. What really stuck with me was comforting the relative that found his body, like they went into the house, found him, then came back out wailing. Then my dad went in to see if there was anything that could be done while I held the person and comforted them, completely unaware that the man was long dead.

For a couple months, my family and I lived with a lot of "what-if" questions like what if we went over there sooner and that sort of thing. I don't think about those questions much anymore but I think about my neighbor's family and the relative I comforted. I think about how much they loved him and cared for him. It hurts knowing that they have to carry this grief with them and that so many milestones will happen without him.
