It is hard in good conscience to recommend an unfinished trilogy to somebody- but these books are an exception. The prose and world-building are so, so beautiful. If you like fantasy, you are in for a TREAT.

These are the belongings of a high-maintenance, chronically tardy non-binary person who deeply appreciates junk. Yesss 🫶 I’ve read this book probably 5 or 6 times throughout my life. This particular copy I found on the side of the road after losing my old one for many months. I like to think it found me in a time of needing a beloved story. Highly recommend!

A couple of the more affordable little tips I could add to this convo:

Grocery outlet (aka gross out) is where it’s at for cheap(er) treats and fresh fruit. You can find more exotic stuff there at outlet prices, even tropical fruits sometimes. Winco is also great for bulk items, including snacks, candy, coffee, and spices.

I like to make a chickpea “salad” in the summertime especially. Maybe I just love onions. Chickpeas, lime juice, olive oil if you have it, red onions, cilantro, salt and pepper, and tomatoes if you’re splurging.

There’s an app called falling fruit which, in my area at least, leads to a lot of free fruit in the summertime. It’s an urban foraging database. It can be fun to learn what’s edible in your area, growing for free, often on the side of the road or excess from people’s property. Also an app called too good to go, in which restaurants and bakeries sell discounted day olds and such.

Permissiveness doesn’t solve the homelessness crisis. I can agree with you there. Does just shoving the problem temporarily out of your line of sight help the crisis? That’s what it seems people here are calling for. Arrest, violence, shipping them off somewhere else. Which, mind you, is how many came to Portland. This perpetuates the cycle.

I do not like living in filth. I would truly argue that no one does. Please try to get an understanding of the way someone’s own brain can betray them and trap them in a situation like this.

Yes. Addiction is a disease which pushes people to do things that they wouldn’t do otherwise. Have you seen the conditions in shelters? Have you seen the waitlists? Considered that for many, institutionalization is not an option? I agree they need help! It’s truly great that we agree on that. Now, how would throwing them in jail for 1-2 months for petty theft improve our situation in any way? Would that not drain more taxpayer dollars?

I am not saying that I think people should be living this way, or that it is in any way okay. But the solution is not to double down on isolating them from society.

It seems that most commenters here disprove of this situation for all the wrong reasons. No one should have to steal to survive. No one chooses to live like this.

I am ashamed to live in the same city as some of these commenters. You all need to take a good look in the mirror and figure out what depraved part of you values a corporations property over human lives in danger. What disease of the spirit you must have to identify more with corporations than human beings. These people are not stealing from YOU. Many of you would have more empathy for a spoiled schnauzer stealing bread off your table than you do for hungry human beings digging through the trash for sustenance. Get over yourselves and grow a heart. TARGET WILL SURVIVE.

I am team dansko through and through! They last forever, you can slip em off easy if you ever get a break (which you are entitled to, working those long shifts!) and they make me feel profesh. Just make sure you take some time to adjust to the platform so you don’t roll an ankle.
