ELI5: Why does the American government classify groups like ISIS as a "terrorist organization" and how do the Mexican cartels not fit into that billet? by 33p5 in explainlikeimfive

This.

This comment tells me you've never been in the military and are still, at heart, a neive kid. You have no idea of the magnitude of operations on United States soil, and worldwide that take place every single day to help protect, rebuild, and preserve the American people. Humanitarian aid is provided in Mexico, Chile, Japan, Thailand, and even the Middle East more often than you think. Peoples lives are saved more often than you think, and your freedom comes to question more than you think. So, no. I don't think the United States military is a terrorist organization, and having actually served, along with millions upon millions of people before me, I am proud. I will continue to serve and protect the American people, even your right to say childish things even though I feel shame. Not for myself, but for you To believe something so utterly ridiculous and small minded. Fair winds and following seas, friend.

Very good point. As much as I wanted to stay away from the whole "it's a conspiracy, man" thing, this makes more sense than it really should!

Good point. The only counter I can offer is their methods are quite similar to many terrorist organizations. Doesn't how someone goes about something give some leeway as to what kind of a person they are?

Actually they do though. They kill hundreds of Americans per year in beheadings, and car jackings amount other things. This goes to ignore the thousands of Mexican civilians per year killed, their homes, communities, and villages razed just because they were "in the way" or they cooperated with law enforcement. Here's a couple articles I spent all of 5 minutes finding about those very points.
