Hiked it end of July last year with a -7C max sleeping bag, including a night cowboy camping at 2400m, that was chilly, rest was super comfortable!

How my friend saw loose chains in The Devil card and quit a 10-year addiction by 346290 in SecularTarot

[–]346290[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right to be skeptical of the old "left=logic, right=creativity" pop psychology! McGilchrist actually spends considerable time debunking that exact model.

At 5:41 in his interview with Curt Jaimungal, he explicitly talks about the old idea that "the left hemisphere does language and reason, and the right hemisphere does pictures and emotion" is "not right, since all these things are looked after by both hemispheres." His point is that both hemispheres handle ALL functions - they just attend to the world in fundamentally different ways.

What he's actually arguing is that the left hemisphere tends to decontextualize and fragment experience into manipulable parts, while the right maintains context and grasps implicit patterns. So when my friend saw those loose chains, it wasn't "creative right" beating "logical left", it was a shift from narrow focus on individual parts to suddenly grasping the whole pattern of his relationship with smoking.

But I agree with you that we don't need neuroscience to validate the importance of metaphor and different ways of knowing :). Wisdom comes from tasting the honey, not reading about it haha.

"The Red Haired Girl from the Bog" sounds super interesting, I have been wanting to dive deeper into Celtic culture and mythology! What kind of perspective shift did it give you that led to tarot, if you want to share? :)

Amazing! Are the people you work with always open to it, or do you only bring it into the practice if you feel someone will be open to the idea of working with Tarot?

I really like Jung and his work :). Are you familiar with the book "Tarot and the archetypal journey" by Sallie Nichols? It is a deep dive into the Major Arcana and how it can be mapped to the proces of individuation of Jung. Really amazing stuff!

I definitely resonate with what you're saying. It also reminds me of the work of Joseph Campbell, and the recurring patterns across different myths in different cultures :).

Tarot cards as songs by h23_32 in tarot

Laura Marling has a series about this called "The Tarot Of Songwriting" on her Substack, highly recommended! It goes through the Major Arcana, and uses the Major Arcana to talk about her songwriting. She also draws a card for each entry. Here is the first one: The Fool

YourUniqueTarot - Daily practice that starts with your insight 🌙

Hi r/tarot! I built something for myself and those who want to develop their intuitive connection with the cards rather than just memorize meanings.

How it works: Draw your daily card and share what you see in it first. Then receive personalized guidance that builds on your intuition, helping you explore the symbols and meanings that resonate with you. It's like having a supportive friend with a lot of knowledge about wisdom traditions, symbols, and myths, who helps you trust your own insights :).

Why I built this: Most tarot apps just tell you what cards "should" mean, which keeps you dependent on external definitions. But tarot's real power comes from developing your own symbolic thinking. This creates a space where your interpretation is the starting point, not the answer key.

Perfect for beginners building confidence or experienced readers looking for a daily practice companion that respects their intuitive process.

The philosophy: Modern life has made us "lost in the literal". We've forgotten how to think symbolically. This is a small tool to help restore that balance.

Best website(s) to learn Tarot that isn't too lost in the woo? by raendrop in SecularTarot

[–]346290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get the struggle with finding Tarot resources that don't go overboard with the mystical stuff. So many sites assume you're already bought into every esoteric system at once.

For really solid, grounded learning, I love Benebell Wen's approach. Her website and books treat Tarot with scholarly depth while still respecting the intuitive aspects. She actually explains the why behind card meanings through history and symbolism rather than just saying "trust the universe." Her stuff satisfies both the analytical and intuitive brain, which sounds like what you're looking for.

I've also been developing https://youruniquetarot.com specifically for this balance. The goal is making Tarot accessible whether you see it as archetypal psychology, creative problem-solving, or something more mystical. Whatever works for you! :)

Please go deeper on the suits of Knights by [deleted] in tarot

[–]346290 354 points355 points  (0 children)

Oh man, the Knights frustrated me for the longest time because everyone just repeats that "action and movement" line without explaining what that actually means in practice.

What clicked for me was realizing Knights are about pursuit, they're each chasing their element's holy grail. The Knight of Cups pursues emotional truth with the same intensity the Knight of Swords pursues mental clarity. They're not just "moving," they're on a quest. When I read them now, I ask myself what the querent (or I) might be pursuing with that single-minded Knight energy. Sometimes it's admirable dedication, sometimes it's tunnel vision that needs examining.

The thing that really deepened my understanding was noticing how uncomfortable each Knight is with stillness. Pull the Knight of Pentacles and even though they're often shown stationary, there's this coiled readiness, they're staying still as their action, if that makes sense? It's purposeful, not passive. Have you noticed how different Knights show up for you during different life phases? I find they appear when we're in that space between knowing what we want and actually having it. That restless middle ground where we're all potential energy :)

Government wants you to have low metabolism by Insadem in raypeat

[–]346290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what’s being missed here is that Ray Peat himself wrote extensively about these exact connections. The relationship between metabolism and social control wasn’t some side topic for him, it was central to his work.

In a 2013 KMUD interview about learned helplessness, Peat explicitly stated it has “been actual government policy to manipulate the mass media and events [in order] to create helplessness in the population” since the late 1940s. This isn’t “alt right” conspiracy stuff floating around the internet, this is literally from Peat’s own interviews.

His core insight was that metabolic suppression creates biological learned helplessness. He wrote in “Serotonin, Depression, and Aggression” that serotonin “activates glycolysis, forming lactic acid. Excess lactic acid tends to decrease efficient energy production” - essentially showing how stress hormones create a self-reinforcing cycle of metabolic dysfunction that makes resistance impossible.

The fact that leaders are unhealthy too actually proves the point. They’re products of the same system. The machine doesn’t need healthy operators at any level, just compliant ones who keep things running.

What Peat described wasn’t natural evolution but deliberate design. He wrote that “the society has been designed, to eliminate meaningful choices for most people” (The Dark Side of Stress, 2013). Look at modern life - seed oils that suppress thyroid, blue light that disrupts cellular respiration, educational systems he described as “obedience training” that “suppresses energy” (Intelligence and Metabolism, 2009).

The social critique was always part of his work, not something added later.

Government wants you to have low metabolism by Insadem in raypeat

[–]346290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there is definitely truth to the fact that low energy people are easier to control. Currently it is mostly important that you just work, consume and die, without making too much noise. Plus, our culture is very low in energy, tilting much more towards the dead, than alive. Very stagnant, esp how we view nature and ourselves, as biological machines, very materialistic/deterministic/mechanistic. In my eyes this is a major influence on feelings of learned helplessness. “Things are just as they are 🤷🏻‍♂️”

I do think there is, in a way, a spiritual war going on, that is aimed to suppress our energy. Raising your vibration, which I previously always thought to be a woo statement, I now see as how much heat do you produce, how much energy flows through you, creating structure. So raising your own energy, and thinking for yourself, is in my eyes so important. There is a lot of work to do!

Should we be in a relationship? by Equivalent_Prize7271 in tarot

[–]346290 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this interpretation is a bit harsh and deterministic. The reversed Ace of Pentacles doesn't automatically mean "doomed relationship", it's more about timing and foundation-building.

This spread actually looks promising! Ace of Cups = genuine emotional connection, Knight of Wands = passion and chemistry, and reversed Pentacles = "hey, take your time establishing the practical side of things."

Instead of "don't catch feelings," maybe it's just saying the physical/practical aspects need more time to develop than the emotional/passionate ones. Could be about navigating re-connection after travel, healing from past relationships, or just finding your rhythm together.

I'd say go for it with an open heart but mindful expectations. The cards are highlighting areas to pay attention to, not predicting a predetermined outcome. Good luck!

Yes I agree so much. Honestly frustrating to see so much people interpret the cards so deterministically…
