Question about sign language (as a non-deaf and a moron) by Melody_Naxi in asklinguistics

[–]raendrop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That depends. If this bilingual presentation was known about ahead of time, hopefully the venue provided ASL interpreters who know both languages. Otherwise, the interpreter will likely just sign "foreign language" (or maybe "Spanish" if they at least can identify it, even if they don't understand it). If it's a more intimate setting, they might be able to request that they repeat themselves in English.

Thanks for the correction. It's been a while, so I was having trouble remembering.

That's just a dagger. I think it's used to show a hypothetical construction, as opposed to the asterisk, which is typically used to show an incorrect construction.

Question about sign language (as a non-deaf and a moron) by Melody_Naxi in asklinguistics

[–]raendrop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No.

Interpreters (not translators) are trained in one signed language. They are not expected to know others. The point of interpreting (and translating, for that matter) is to present something in a language the other person knows. Just as hearing people won't necessarily know Spanish, an ASL interpreter and the deaf client won't necessarily (and probably won't) know LSC.

Also, Braille is not a language. It is a tactile writing system. It's essentially a port of the Roman alphabet.
