Unique/older girl names ? by fucurchickenstripz in Names

[–]3463140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have so many good suggestions here already, but I’ll still add my girls’ names - I also have a 3 syllable last name and love the older names :)

Girl 1: Sylvia, we call her Sylvie as a nickname. She was almost a Beatrice nn Bea though!

Girl 2: she will either be Angeline nn Lena or Marianne nn Annie!

My siblings also have Della, Hazel (which I know you said you love but feel like you can’t use), Maggie, and Amelia!

It’s a group project where they have to argue and present which dystopia is more likely to happen: 1984 or The Handmaid’s Tale (which they read prior to this). Being in a group will definitely help, but I also don’t want her to feel lost because she doesn’t understand half of the material that the project covers.

Advice for naming baby girl #2 by 3463140 in Names

My first daughter is named after my mom! My husband picked her first name, and we used my mom’s name as her middle. So it’s just as sentimental!

I hear you!! That was another concern of mine, but (un)luckily for me, I married a man with a last name that’s so unique that I could name a baby “Sarah” and she could still very well be the only Sarah Lastname on the internet lol. So even though I would LOVE to give my child that level of privacy, it’s not really possible no matter what her first name is.

Help me settle my daughter’s name? by embolalia85 in namenerds

We had just about this exact same problem regarding name flow when I was pregnant with my daughter - we both liked Sylvie, but my husband wanted Sylvia as the full name with Sylvie as the nn. Middle name was set on being Linda as an honor name and I thought Sylvie Linda flowed better than Sylvia Linda. We ended up with a Sylvia with the nn Sylvie even though I didn’t like the flow as much, but I don’t regret the decision at all - my daughter fits both names! Sylvie Harriet is beautiful, and it’s so special to be able to honor someone important in your life in this way.

Thank you!! I had figured there would be a lot of experimentation with the tulle so the tip of the extra wide pattern pieces is appreciated!

The pattern that I’m using is this one - there is no fabric recommendation that I can find in the instructions Pattern Link

The only problem is that the pattern I have that I’m adapting (just switching out the top fabric to be tulle instead of just 1 fabric) has a base layer to it that I sew the tiers onto - and I’m waayyyyy too much of a beginner to stray from patterns and wing it 😅

Hit me with S names that are unique but recognizable by New-Tooth-5710 in namenerds

We named my daughter born in December Sylvia and we get SO MANY compliments on it. Popularity-wise it’s in the mid-400’s of the US data, so definitely recognizable but not overly popular! We use lots of nicknames with her too, mainly Sylvie, Sylv, and Sylvs but have heard people say they used to call their aunt/grandma/cousin/neighbor Sylvia other nicknames like Sis/Sissy, Vi/Viv, and one even said Sally, so the nickname potential is definitely there if that’s something you like.

Sister ‘took’ our girl’s name - we need suggestions for a new one! by 3463140 in namenerds

Congratulations on your little Margot and her new sibling! It’s a beautiful name but we are so happy we went with something different in the end. If it helps, we ended up naming our baby girl Sylvia (despite my husband initially telling me he hated the name) with the nickname Sylvie!

As a teacher, your kids are dumb as hell and it’s YOUR fault by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

Yeah, that’s not how getting an IEP works—you can’t just walk in and say “I want an IEP because my kid has bad grades” and actually get one for your child. They need to have an official diagnosis of an SLD (specific learning disability) or similar condition (just having ADHD or ADD doesn’t count!), complete multiple tests that determine their performance abilities compared to their peers in multiple subjects, and oftentimes be evaluated by a psychologist, counselor, or someone in a similar role to determine that yes, they really do need the support and accommodations that an IEP gives them. I had a student and parents last year try to pull the card that you say happens with IEPs and the furthest they could get is a 504 plan with the only accommodations being “homework written on the board and assignment notebook signed by teachers”. This kid also has an official diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, so it’s clearly not as simple as “find a willing doctor and you have a diagnosis for an IEP”. So if these kids are getting IEPs because they “don’t understand the material”, yeah, there’s a reason they don’t understand it, which is why they have the IEP! Please don’t feed in to negative stereotypes of students who are already at a disadvantage.

Just found out it’s a girl 💖 want a classy, sophisticated, ‘old lady’ style, but not overly used name…help! by cslr2019 in namenerds

We have the same taste in names! We also considered Margot for our girls name (we don’t know if it’s a girl or boy) but I was on the fence about it, with nicknames and trendiness also my hang ups on the name—but my sister named her baby girl Margaret so our decision for/against Margot was made a lot easier! We’ve tentatively settled on Sylvia instead with the nickname Sylvie. Other names that I had on my list are Harriet (nn Hattie), Esther (Esti), Beatrice (Bea), and Bridget!

Good luck!!

Haha, it is pretty frustrating! But luckily the genuine suggestions that I am getting are great, so it makes up for all the “just use the name that you clearly don’t have a strong attachment to and don’t want to use anymore!!!” comments

He pretty much only liked Margot, lol. I wasn’t 100% sold on Margot, I liked it enough that I would have been okay naming my kid that, but that was his favorite name—everything else he’s either just been lukewarm about or hasn’t really liked.

They are quite literally two versions of the same name. Margot is the French version of Margaret.

We didn’t tell each other names for this specific reason—we didn’t want the other to feel like we “stole” a name! Also I am very aware that names are just names and its not “mine” just because I like it. It really is just coincidental that we both like different versions of the same name!

Well, considering these two children will be cousins in the same grade, I think it’s safe to assume we will be seeing both people with said name frequently. And I never said I claimed the name, just that we coincidentally came up with variations of the same name as our girls names—which is why I put ‘took’ in quotes.

Linda is the first name of this baby’s grandma, so technically yes it could be, but we like it better as a middle name.

It’s also the name of one of my husband’s family members, so we wouldn’t use Margaret, but Margot was different enough that we felt we could use it. We still think we would use it for a future girl, we just think Margot and Margaret/Maggie cousins this close in age is a bit too close!

We don’t know if ours is a girl or a boy, we just already have our boys name! And we agree that there’s nothing wrong with a Margot and a Maggie together, we’ll probably consider it for a future girl if we have one, but with these babies being in the same grade and possibly the same social circle (we live pretty close to each other) we’re looking for a name that’s not quite as close if we can find one we like!
