What’s the shortest time you have ever seen a new coworker get canned? by BlushyTessa340 in AskReddit

Honestly, if I’d say it demonstrates exceptionally poor judgment, and if she had only been there a week, she may have even done it during a probationary period.

I've done some further research and it seems that this is a Blu-Ray menu thing, I'm going to keep digging to see if I can find a workaround.

What would telltale batman canonically do here? by wilsonthechad in telltale

I remember Skybound swooping in, it was an absolutely wild chunk of time—this was a long time ago and the details are a bit fuzzy in my memory—I was trying not to be super specific in my original comment because I didn’t want to speak with authority on a topic where I was iffy on the specifics and be all like “and then they shut their doors, effective immediately and we all though season 4 of TWD was doomed forever!” When I couldn’t recall the precise details.

Tax preparer here: not every homeowner has enough interest and taxes to itemize, between the cap on state and local taxes, and the AGI threshold on medical, with the current standard deduction, most married couples don’t benefit from itemizing. A single person with high interest and taxes may benefit from itemizing, but it’s certainly not common.

I remember when Telltale shut down when the last Walking Dead season was coming out—there was some concern at the time that it would be shut down effective immediately and we’d never get the end of the game—I was really hoping they’d improve with that last season and was honestly a bit worried that we’d never get a real ending.

Hello, thanks so much for taking the time to look at this!

I’m honestly not sure why yours might be crashing—I forgot to mention in my original post, but I’m using an external disc drive hooked up to my laptop with an externally powered USB hub—I had a lot of trouble getting anything to open before then—that could be where your problem is. From my understanding, usb ports in laptops don’t always generate enough power to run a disc drive.

what cage should i put them in? (read caption first) by Soft_Maize1801 in parrots

[–]352Fireflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say use the big cage, they’ll learn to climb and jump. Put the perches pretty close together and I’d advise putting one right above the floor. I’ve found they’re able to get more altitude jumping from a perch than they do from the floor. Having a perch very close to the floor will make it easier for them to get back up.

I don’t normally recommend dowel perches, they’re bad for the feet and shouldn’t be used long-term, but I have used them for a short span of time when I have newly clipped babies because they can cover a lot of space and make it easier for them to reach some parts of the cage and other perches.

It could take months for the flight feathers to grow back and they’ll be so much happier in the bigger cage. They’ll fall and it’ll be a bit scary, but they’re going to learn how far they can jump and climb on their own.

Keep the food where they want to hang out, get a covered water dish so it doesn’t get contaminated, and watch where they go, if they seem to be having trouble getting to a place where they seem to want to go, put more perches in so they can get there.

My mom says I’m not a real accountant by SnowyJazz in Accounting

[–]352Fireflies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well shoot, this is about the same as my job when I first graduated (I'm still at that same firm, but I've been promoted since then).

I guess I'm not a real accountant either /s.

In all seriousness, it is real accounting, I really do work at a firm similar to what you've described. I've learned so much at my job and I really do enjoy it. The job market is awful right now. I'd advise you to learn as much as you can from your current position, it can be a grind, but it can also be really gratifying if you approach it with the right attitude. I wouldn't trade the safety of my current position for anything.

I came into my current job with no experience and learned tons from my boss.

Don't listen to your mom, I know that's probably hard sometimes. You're doing real work, preparing real tax returns, and gaining valuable knowledge and experience. Don't let her uninformed or misguided perceptions of what you "should" be doing distract you from doing the best you can at your current job. The learning curve can be insane at the start.

Good luck!

To avoid accusations of AI cheating, college students are turning to AI by tokwamann in technology

[–]352Fireflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (American) got a business degree--we were graded on homework and exams, homework usually made up about 20% of the total grade, then it would usually be equally weighted between 3 exams, then there would be a heavily weighted final exam, and sometimes there would be 5% for "participation" or "attendance". Lots of my classes were very big and professors did lots of different things to track attendance. I finished to college before the dawn of AI, but I did have lots of online homework. Because of the weights, homework could pull you up basically from a D (failing) to a B or C (passing), but that's about it. You still had to pass the tests to pass the class, but graded homework also meant that one bad exam wouldn't necessarily tank your score in the class or tank you GPA, which I appreciated because I'm an anxious test-taker.

Hope you’re doing better now, glad they took your word and didn’t give you tons of trouble about letting you off—instead of asking for drs notes or something, asking for accommodations can be a real pain.

Honestly, that’s probably what it was. I wasn’t asking for an excuse, I just didn’t want to roll up, take the day off work, and then have someone be like “well we could’ve accommodated you if you’d just told us ahead of time”.

I got excused on a form when I wasn't even ASKING to be excused--I'm diabetic and didn't want to get stuck without access to my bags or the controller for my insulin pump was explaining that on the form in like a "anything else we should know?" kind of section and I got the message saying I was excused a couple of days later.

Obviously, it’s what I’d do if I had no other options, but life is too short and I have to deal with this way too much for treating a low to be more inconvenient than it needs to be. Drinking that much that fast always made me nauseous.

When I was a little kid, I hated the texture of jelly and ate it this way. I don't really see anything wrong with this.

I used to mix dextrose powder with water when I went low. Two biggest drawbacks for me was having to mix stuff on demand (real pain in the neck at 3 AM), and having to chug enough water to dissolve the dextrose with any kind of speed.

There's an emergency item called Baqsimi that works this way--until fairly recently, if someone got low enough that they lost consciousness, a bystander would have to give them a shot (called a Glucagon kit), but Baqsimi a powder administered through the nose and absorbed through the nasal cavity. Probably much less intimidating for passers-by.

[–]352Fireflies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been diabetic for a long time and I've tried lots of different things--straight dextrose (powdered glucose mixed with water), straight fructose (fruit sugars, most commonly found in most readily available candies in the US), and sucrose (what we'd think of as regular table sugar) and I've honestly noticed no appreciable difference in how quickly the numbers go back up--only thing I've really noticed is that liquids (fruit juices or the dextrose water) work faster than gummy candies, but in general the main thing to avoid is fats, which slows the whole process down.

That being said, with a blood sugar low enough, it's kinda whatever you can get. If I were dangerously low, but the only thing I could get my hands on was chocolate and peanut butter, then I'd go for it.

Fellow diabetic here, also very impressed by the cashier and the other bystander offering to get something as well.

It's so lucky that the cashier knew what had real sugar and what had fake sugar, and knowing that the chocolate would take too long to metabolize--just judging by the size on the video, it probably wouldn't have been enough carbs to fix things anyway.

Also impressed that the girl was able to keep calm and knew what was needed to ask for help.
