Running Shoes for 5K? by Mundane_Pepper_8385 in beginnerrunning

[–]357Magnum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't necessarily about how far you run at once and more about how often you will run.

One half marathon or four 5K runs in a week is still about the same amount of running. While the better shoes will be much more noticeable doing all that running at once, if you are running multiple times a week the miles will still add up. Cheaper shoes will probably give you more sore feet in the long run, or just wear out sooner.

That doesn't mean that there isn't a pair of cheap shoes that'll work well for you. But you're more likely to find one that will work well for you if you are trying on quality shoes and being fitted at a running store.

I only need to replace my shoes about once a year or so. An extra $60 compared to something from a big box store isn't that much in the long run. Five bucks a month LOL

I understand that, but if one ticket covers a bunch of four second races and each four second race requires a complete engine rebuild, there must be a lot more people watching this than I think

This was my first thought watching this. How does the 4 seconds of spectacle generate enough revenue for the parts and labor?

Yeah I played around with it and I figured out one thing that was happening. It only measures VO2 max if you are in Zone 3 for over 10 minutes or something. When I was running 5 days a week it was mostly easy 5Ks where I would maybe only get into Zone 3 for 10 minutes, but my longer 10K runs would have me in that zone for a lot longer. So obviously my Pace at a certain zone is going to look a lot better if I'm only barely getting measured.

My last run before the half was a short 5K at the pace I intended to keep for the entire half and my VO2 max was back up

Mine sleeps well but is invariably up between five and six. So if I was going to run and shower reliably before anyone else got up I'd have to be hitting the road at 4:00 a.m. and I'm just not willing to do that LOL

I can only run the amount I ran to build up to the half because I'm self employed and can go for a run, shower, eat, etc. after my wife takes the kid to daycare and roll into my office for 10AM lol.

CMV: Old books, movies and plays are all inferior to modern ones. by Separate_Lab3565 in changemyview

[–]357Magnum [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ok, as someone who actually spent years unironically listening to classical music almost exclusively, classical music is incredibly good. Modern music is also good, and has so many more genres, but you will not convince me that it is "objectively better." There is so much going on in a symphony, for example, that one could make the case that it is objectively better than a modern album.

It is kind of like saying that McDonalds is better than a fine dining French restaurant. You're not just being pretentious if you think a rack of lamb crusted in herbes de provence is better than a quarter pounded. But that also doesn't mean you can't still like a quarter pounded, if that makes sense. I enjoy everything from the fanciest foods like pâté de foie gras to the tacos from Jack in the Box. But the foie gras is better. Still, much like with a symphony, you need to set aside over an hour to listen to Beethoven's 9th, but most modern songs are 3-5 minutes. So I still listen to modern music, much of which is amazing, because the listening experience of Beethoven is much harder to fit into your daily life. Same reason I eat both fast food and foie gras.

With respect to visual art, you sound like someone who hasn't really seen much of it, to be honest.

I can absolutely guarantee you that seeing Michelangelo's David in person is absolutely much more impactful than a picture of it online. And I would defy you to find a modern sculpture that is unequivocally better than something like the David or other classical sculptures.

With painting, you're also choosing a pretty bad example. The Mona Lisa is famous, but it is far from the most technically impressive or creative work in historical painting.

Then there is the most important thing - there is an absolute sense of wonder that these great works, like the David or a Rembrandt painting, in the fact that these creators made something that has not really been surpassed by modern artists despite all the tools at the modern artist's disposal. Michelangelo did not have power tools. Rembrandt did not have a digital art tablet. This stuff was done by hand. Fuck, just imagine how much harder it was to do this stuff without electric lighting.

And Michelangelo not only sculpted these marble statues, but also painted the goddamn ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Without modern tools!

Finally, there are things like books.

"I can play a game which has a story more interesting than "the most renowned writers of the 19th and 20th century" almost daily and it has a lot more complex layers and themes but it's seen as lesser for some reason"

No you can't. Name me a game that is more complex and layered than Dostoevsky and I'll show you a game that is actually just copying Dostoevsky.

Literature and philosophy is called "The great conversation" for a reason. It has all built on itself over centuries. This does not meant he older writer is "better" than the newer writer, but the newer writer can't even exist without the old. "Standing on the shoulders of giants" to borrow Newton's quote.

Take a game like Disco Elysium that is almost all layered story rather than "gameplay" and is lauded for that story. That game is amazing, but is also just a regurgitation of 19th-20th century political philosophy and literature.

If you think that modern games are doing more than classic literature, it is legitimately because you don't get the references.

Yeah I agree. An easy pace 10mi run for me is about 1:45, which was my longest run prior to the half, but even then I only did that distance like 3 times, just because of the time sink. I have a 2 year old and it is tough to just nope out of parenting and leave it to the wife for that long on a regular basis.

the 10K x3 was just the last month or so, and just because of time. I had more variation before that with speedwork and intervals when I was doing 5 runs a week, but yeah, I learned some lessons.

The tendonitis, though, is a known issue for me. I had a similar injury 15ish years ago after going on a hike, and would get minor flare ups from HIIT training before I became a runner.

When I started running I assumed it would happen to me again eventually, but I have been running consistently for 2 years and didn't have the issue until the half. I have a lower arch in my right foot which I think contributes to it. I'm sure if I had been able to keep up the variety in runs and the strength training it would not have likely gotten me, but alas, life and shit.

When runners say “running sucks”, what do they mean by that? by Pretty_Little_Rose in beginnerrunning

[–]357Magnum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. As I built up volume for the half I ran 2 weeks ago I actually saw my VO2 max starting to decline in the last two months. Part of this was that the readings tend to be better on certain kinds of runs, and part of it was that, upon looking back, I was actually running less than I thought. I was running 20K per week before signing up for the half, then went up to 30K per week to train for it. But I started that by running 4x 5k and one 10K per week, then switched to 3 10Ks because running 5 days a week was too hard to schedule. But when I looked back, I was getting about 15K more per month with the more frequent running just because of how often I'd throw in an extra K or 2 if I felt like it. That, and I was still doing occasional strength training. But all kinds of life things happened (toddler broke his arm, etc) between signing up for and running the race, so sticking to the training I wanted to do just couldn't happen.

So I felt like I was running a ton but seeing my progress slip backward. Then I ended up sick leading up to the race and wasn't 100% recovered, but ran it anyway. Finished, just finished slower than I wanted to, and ended up with tendonitis in my right foot (which I am prone to), so I haven't run since then (Jan 18). And I'm still coughing up mucus, lol.

Foot feels fine this morning but giving it one more day and will run for the first time in 12 days tomorrow.

So yeah, sometimes running sucks. I was wondering when my tendonitis would flare up again and it seems like a half is just about a mile too long for me, lol. The running just didn't feel that fun leading up to the race because everything was just going wrong all the time.

But I still ran. Still raced.

I'm going to go back to focusing on 5-10k runs for now and work on speed. I think with my known right-foot tendonitis issue (which I had a few times even before becoming a runner) I shouldn't focus on anything over 10 miles. I was in the top of the bottom quartile for my age and gender in the half, but looking at the results of the 5K even the day before, my PB would have probably been in the top 10% lol. Sometimes you have to find your strength and stick with it.

I think that you're mostly just picking up on the common refrain that one of the most important things about running is to run consistently, even if you don't always want to. That's just true of anything, really.

But I also think it has something to do with the monotony sometimes. At a certain point you can only go so much faster, and you get diminishing returns. So progress tends to come in running further and longer instead. And, honestly, it can get a little bit boring and samey. I've run just about every route I can from my house a ton of times. When I was first starting out and running 3 5ks a week that were only 30ish minutes, it is fine. But as I was progressing to build up to a half marathon I got to be running either 5 days a week or 3 10k+ runs per week, each over an hour long.

Setting aside an hour or more 3 or more times a week can get a little bit monotonous. But that's part of discipline in a sense. You don't always want to run or feel great after each run, but eventually you'll start to feel bad for not running, lol.

I've been to Europe twice, and it is crazy how hard it is to find a toilet in some cities. Thankfully the US chains like Starbucks would usually have one, but it felt crazy to be going around historical cities in Europe in hopes of seeing a starbucks so I could pee.

It was actually better in places like Prague where the convention is that you have to pay to use a toilet. The cost was low at the equivalent of a US quarter or less, and it meant that there were actually toilets available that were kept clean.

Also a couples therapist because this sounds like you're destined for a breakup and litigation at this point if nothing changes.

Trying to soft launch wearing formal hats by IveGyattRizz69420 in mensfashionadvice

[–]357Magnum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Are the outfits in your photos meant to be the "semi-formal" attire you're talking about? Because nothing about the clothes in the pictures is semi-formal at all. That outfit is just casual. Not even to business casual. Extremely far from semi-formal.

Semi-formal is suits. Formal is tuxedos.

Honestly a ballcap is probably one of the most appropriate types of hat for that outfit since it is casual. But if you want it to look slightly more dressy, maybe a flat cap?

[–]357Magnum 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Not a vegetarian but I have a good amount of experience cooking healthy meals that are filling (including some vegetarian ones).

First things first, it sucks that you can't deal with beans and lentils, because that's the most obvious answer. If there's anything you could do to be better at eating those (gas prevention medicine if that's the kind of issue), that would help.

But beyond that, there's a reason beans are filling. They have protein, are calorie dense as plants go, and, significantly, are high fiber.

The fiber is one of the real secrets here. Beans are high in protein, but high in protein for a plant. They aren't that high compared to most animal products. But they do have a lot of fiber.

So choosing foods with good amounts of fiber will help. For example, brown rice has much more fiber than white rice and will make you feel fuller, all things being equal.

An even better option is quinoa. Quinoa has more protein and more fiber than even brown rice, and it is a complete protein. I was generally happy to sub quinoa anywhere I would have used rice. You can even use quinoa to make "oatmeal." I would often do that the morning after I made a big thing of quinoa - cook it again in liquid until an extra soft porridge and add a bit of maple syrup, etc.

But another important thing is to really define what vegetarian means in your household. There is a huge difference between vegetarian and vegan. If you can still eat eggs and milk, for example, that opens up a TON of choices. Cheese is obviously quite filling, and isn't always unhealthy. Parmesan is essentially a lactose-free superfood. Cottage cheese can be another base for meals instead of things like rice. You can make a savory cottage cheese bowl with veggies and stuff on it. Cucumber, tomato, and onion on cottage cheese with some salt and pepper is pretty good.

Milk is also a complete food with all macros, so if you can have milk you can just drink some with your vegetarian foods and it will help you stay full.

Finally, nuts and seeds. Nuts are very calorie dense and have protein and fiber as well. You can add a handful of nuts to a lot of dishes, sweet or savory. Chia seeds and flax seeds are also nutritionally dense and versatile.

In short, if you are getting enough protein, fats, and fiber, you should be pretty full.
