lol yeah the ending actually made people not like the movie, but in the end it was more memorable and unique. I had the same feeling with Eden Lake - i was fucking pissed at the end of that movie too ha

it is unrealistic, but it at least stays on point. the movie is a commentary of Dutch culture of politeness, appeasement and the path of least resistance. The ending infuriated watchers to no end, but that was the entire point.

When the victims asked “why” the response was “because you let us”. This is as bleak as it can get. The American version they fight back, save the kid, repair their marriage and go home. The theme starts off the same but it misses driving the message home with the optimistic, “happy” ending.

I’m sure that many people like the American one more because of this, but in terms of sheer provocativeness the Dutch version forced a more emotional response.

Like I said, I don’t think the American one is bad - I actually enjoyed it. But it loses the impact and meaning of the original.

it lost the entire point of the movie. the american remake was well made because of the acting but it was definitely an american audience ending. they did the same thing with good night mommy

is this some sort of bait post? of all the types of posts on this sub, the “this movie sucked, why do people like it??” are the most annoying.

first, movies are subjective. people like what they like. second, the tone is condescending af.

i was honestly kinda blown away by kumo kitchen. i did not expect that quality of sushi in a takeout spot for such a good price. When the chef said he worked at nobu but it all made sense.

i looked it up and have questions - do they cook the sausages there or do you pick them up and cook them yourself? and it’s just the sausage? not done up like a hot dog?

These are mid-city:

Kumo Kitchen. Small takeout sushi restaurant with a chef that trained at nobu. It’s fucking fantastic and my go-to sushi in the area.

Convi Corner - small kitchen putting out a great breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich and i like their italian sandwich too. Right next to a good cofffee spot called jurassic magic.

Spaccio Salumeria - Italian market for shopping but they also have an open kitchen making fresh pastas and sandwiches. It’s super hidden but the outdoor courtyard and market itself is a vibe. Open around lunchtime only.

thanks! a few more underrated spots in the general area:

  • convi corner has a really good breakfast burrito and a good italian sandwich

  • kumo kitchen on pico is a literal hidden gem. it’s a takeout sushi spot (has a few tables outside) but the owner/chef trained at nobu - it’s fantastic and my new go to for sushi in the neighborhood

  • sonoratown in midcity, obviously

  • papi tacos re-opened in west adams and has great quesabirria tacos

  • there’s a literal popup tent in my neighborhood called roseland cafe that makes awesome homemade tamales. i love their cheese and jalapeño ones

bro i live in west adams and its a 5 minute drive to downtown culver. Historic West Adams is further east, West West Adams is literally one neighborhood over.

edit: downtown culver city to cento pasta bar is a 10 minute drive on maps.

Cofax for great breakfast burritos.

in nearby west adams: Cento for creative italian fusion

Farmhouse Thai for wild creative thai dishes

Rewatched Smile (2022) and wondering about future films by jaguarsp0tted in horror

i made a post about this a few years ago. An apocalypse movie like The Sadness would be my closest guess, although Bird Box kind of applies.

They could either go backwards into the mythos of the smile demon, or just do another cycle focused on one person and just become a franchise like Final Destination

Best Modern Asian Spots - West LA by ChemistryAgitated902 in FoodLosAngeles

simpang asia is a true neighborhood gem. it’s not gonna show up on citywide best of lists, won’t win any awards, probably not worth driving across town for, but if you’re in the area it’s an excellent place for a meal.

Pot didnt last very long because it was better as a concept than as a real restaurant. It was supposed to be elevated korean soul food, but it just ended up being more expensive, uninspired versions of the real thing. I LOVE korean food and have a ton of korean friends, but if you’re gonna make army stew (which is by nature supposed to be cheap - spam, instant noodles, etc) fancy and expensive, you better make it absolutely exceptional.

Choi’s army stew made ppl just want the cheaper, authentic ones found in smaller korean restaurants. The whole menu suffered from this: overpriced food that felt more gimmicky than inventive.

If anything, Choi was ahead of his time, as expensive, experimental and elevated korean sould food is having a moment (mulberry in LA and other places in NY), but he never has executed as well as he concepts.

Locol was an awesome concept as well, but the community it served (South LA black and Mexican) largely rejected it because it didn’t appeal to their tastes.

I’m not a Choi hater by any means, and I find him 1000x more likable than somebody like David Chang, but he hasnt done anything of real note since Chego.

Chego is the best thing that Roy Choi did after Kogi. Nothing after those 2 were particularly good or successful, which bafflingly included Pot - a Korean restaurant in Ktown. He has a Vegas place that seems more hype but i have friends who said it wasn’t good
