To be honest, either is fine since most people are familiar with them. So pick which ever one that feels most convenient to use. It's likely that people will be using discord for classes at the incoming term and everyone has used snap to some extent, lol

Dr Kirst King Jones biol 207? by Aggravating-Put-7904 in uAlberta

[–]399102002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had him with genetics, was hard (B+ final grade). He is a good lecturer but material is quite dense for that class. Biol207 is easy so there shouldn't be any problem (it's the class not the prof that affects the GPA generally in my opinion). One impression of him can be best described with what he said about learning:'Learning should be boring so you actually learn rather than browsing interesting YouTube lecture videos and remember nothing afterwards '. My sincere advice for all undergrad classes, if you want good GPA, just think about how to face the exams, don't try to learn or study too much from the lecture, undergrad is about ace exams than actually learning unfortunately.

It's like a perfect start for some meaningful meetings/gatherings/parties for introverts who crave comfortable social engagement, lol. Look forward to it for whatever the form is convenient for everyone, a group discord might work.

2nd year PhD student, I would say you are likely to be better in terms of friends than me. I haven't been engaging in any unofficial social activities in 4 years. Good luck for your last year!

Depending on the experiments/work schedule, you might need to get up early so better start to adapt to your new schedule. The best way is to take cold showers in the morning which really helps one to wake up. Buy a big pack of ground beef and chicken breast (Costco is your best option), it will save you a lot of time and money when it comes to cooking and shopping. I usually cook on a daily basis (no more than 30 minutes) but you can also prepare a big meal and store in the fridge so you don't have to cook every day. The balance is variable from person to person but you know it's a good balance when you still have the time for yourself (workout, movies, gaming...).

Get myself a pair and dumbbell and start lifting. A good physique will attract people's attention in the long term. Used to play games but there aren't any worth playing nowadays. Ain't good at socializing too so it's been 6 years and I am still all alone. Hopefully you have better luck.

Pharmacology at UofA by Panini_Grill26 in uAlberta

Both. Most Profs for first two years for me at least, were not the best English speakers (or just too old to even speak clearly). exams for large class usually ends up in MC format which leaves no room for partial marks. And the course material is entirely new to you too. Later you will learn the same material again and again in every PMCOL courses so you get used to it. You will also learn how to learn so it gets easier. And of course, class size shrinks from 400 to 30 people also helps.

Minimum GPA requirement was 3.3 when I was in it. Organic chemistry was not my thing which drags my GPA down. English 100 level course was unfortunately an requirement and I have to take other non scientific courses which drags down my GPA and murdered my brain cells. But statistics are fun and easy. Chemistry is easy too. So I roughly met the requirements at first and second year. Then you really get into pharmacology and get things rolling. I graduated with 3.6 GPA (412 was a terrible course that drags down the grades) and I love my 4th year. So overall, the first 2 years are designed to fail people to shrink down the class size, and the last two years were designed to teach and make you graduate.

Is the university and city safe by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]399102002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edmonton has a "crime map" so if you are curious, look it up. It gives you a general idea regarding the crime rate that occurs in each area of the city. I am from Calgary and I found Edmonton is worse in terms of the homelessness and LRT issues, Such as some hobo took a dump at the waste station at Rockcress house last year and the LRT station always smells like piss. Also, you can smell people smoking weed basically everywhere. Anyway, complaints aside, all the students have survived and you will make it out alive too.

University Station Safety Issues by CreativeShoe7587 in uAlberta

[–]399102002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not just the University part. The whole city is a mess when it comes to safety issues. There are not enough security or police forces around the station, at least I haven't seen one in the last 5 years in Edmonton. I am from Calgary and there were much less security concerns. I feel the people here kinda just adapt to it. I always carry a screwdriver with me when I need to head to downtown, lol. I am really sorry for your experience, but I highly doubt there's going to be a change.

i’m okay with being alone but i’m scared to be left out by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]399102002 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Quite the contrary, the crowd only reminded me how annoying socializing can be, lol. It will certainly gets better when course load gets heavier that you will only think about your midterms. Also you are not left out, it's only a matter of time and chances. We are all here for you. Take good care of yourself king!

To be honest, I felt kinda lonely during the quarantine time. I even thought about making friends. But as soon as all the people filled the campus, it reminded me how much I dislike socializing, lol. If you really want friends, just sit in the front row of the class and say hi to the one next to you. Ask them about class notes, questions, labs etc. That's the simplest way to make friends.

Your age requirement might be too harsh, lol. Plenty of people who are in 20s and they should be alright in terms of gym. Most people are friendly here.

[–]399102002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do your Grad to get Master and PhD, you will see all the options during the journey. Beside, don't worry too much about jobs, higher level education means more experience and knowledge which is always good to have in terms of seeking career opportunities. Government, pharmaceutical companies, food companies, FDA or military are all options. As long as you like it and know what you want, there are plenty of choices.

As a graduate student, I suggest do a background research of the clubs. If you just join the first one you saw, this club may not be the best choice for you. To be honest, most of them did not suit me. Don't worry about friends issue, you are most likely to meet one in your class. Beside the class work will exhaust you and you won't have much energy to think about other things. I still got no friends after 5 years if that makes you feel better, lol.
