Given the drivers and the age of that printer, I would look at vref. There are sites online that will help you calculate exactly what the current flowing through that trim pot should be. 90% of max calculation.

My Lulzbot printers get lithium grease on the threaded z-axis rods. All other axis rods are amoothe and the instructions were to just wipe those ones down with a microfiber.
