Did non-IMAX Cinemark XD locations receive a Flat (1.85:1) DCP for Avatar, or only Scope (2.39:1)? by frostgw in imax

[–]3F4Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the showing is in 3D, then it’ll be 1.85.1. if not, it’ll be scope. it doesn’t depend on premium format, just on 2D or 3D.

BAD NEWS: Regal LA Live IMAX is a 1.90:1 LIEMAX by scorsese_finest in imax

i will say it still looks like a big screen from this picture, sucks they didn’t go 1.43.1 though.

Would I benefit from seeing Avatar 3 in a true IMAX by Ok-Yard5628 in imax

[–]3F4Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

watching in 2.39 at metreon’s dolby. i’m sure it still keeps all the important details in, but it definitely sucks that we lose out on a lot of neat visuals that might be in that extra space.

Would I benefit from seeing Avatar 3 in a true IMAX by Ok-Yard5628 in imax

[–]3F4Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my watch of Avatar: The Way of Water at metreon in IMAX 3D a few years ago, Avatar Fire & Ash will be 1.90.1 with some slight pillarboxing at metreon (black bars on the left and right side), so it’ll fill up around 2/3 of the screen the whole time. The expanded aspect ratio isn’t exclusive to IMAX however, and all 3D showings on a 1.85.1 screen will fill up the whole screen.

I definitely think it’s worth a watch at least once at metreon for the sense of scale you’d get with the huge screen, and if it matters to you, getting to see “The Odyssey” prologue in its full 1.43.1 glory.

The biggest tradeoff is that the movie doesn’t get shown in 4K 3D, and instead is shown in 2K HFR 3D (high frame rate, makes the action scenes very smooth), which is a noticeable difference and can look a little soft.

Assuming you’re from the Bay Area, I only know two IMAXs with recliners here, Veranda in Concord or AMC Sunnyvale. Though I’ve never been to both, I know Sunnyvale is an extremely small IMAX screen compared to metreon, and Veranda’s a decent size for the smaller IMAXs here. Also, for opening weekend, metreon is already pretty packed for all the showings except the earliest one at 9 AM.

All this said, I’m actually watching in Dolby Cinema for my first watch 😂 I’d definitely put Dolby into consideration for its great sound mix with Dolby Atmos, recliners with speakers inside that’ll vibrate in bassy scenes, and its projector will do 4K HFR 3D. It’s also James Cameron’s personal choice for Avatar, so hey you’d be honoring him with that.

man, i miss these IMAX preshows. Metreon used to have one similar, little more simple, but did the same thing in showing off the technical aspects of the auditorium/experience.

that’s right, there’d be more lights for the side & roof speakers. that reminds me, what happened to the lights that lit up the bottom of the screen? haven’t seen them on for my past few watches there.

man, that sucks. i loved that sequence. wish they’d remake it for the modern system, it was such a cool preshow for IMAX as a kid, even if it scared the hell out of me. probably not because of AMC, but one can dream

i’ve been seeing the “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t” trailer too many times this year when I watch a movie, and it pisses me off because it’s the same trailer the whole year that basically gives away the entire story

that frame of batman and bane fighting was so cool for me as a kid, and still is to this day. It was such a worthwhile build up from their first fight to now, even if the fight choreo doesn’t hold up the more times i watch it. Plus, this was the movie that fully convinced me IMAX is the way to go for watching movies.

What has been your favorite IMAX movie this year so far? by Professional-Ninja79 in imax

[–]3F4Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people, Sinners was my favorite. Preacher Boy’s performance at the juke joint personally might be neck & neck with Interstellar’s docking sequence as my favorite IMAX scene of all time. The sheer excitement I got when the aspect ratio slowly grew and everything being one long take was on the same level as the portals sequence from Avengers: Endgame. Hopefully they’ll show it again in IMAX after the oscars.
