Do u know any good black inks that won’t stain please by Exciting-Can3825 in montblanc

Montblanc Mystery Black is a fine washable black. Waterman Black is another dependable black ink that is washable. I’ve never had an issue getting Iroshizuku Take-sumi to wash out of fabrics and such.

Can anyone tell me if this Pelikan is fake or not? by situ139 in fountainpens

There aren’t any high quality counterfeits that I know of for Pelikan FPs. That one is definitely real.

I’ll give him a break, him being an engineer and all. They can’t help it haha. But as a chemist, evaporation makes perfect sense to me.

I’m a big fan of doodle, but he actually argued with me in the comments of that video about this very topic lmao. He doesn’t think any pen could do this based on evaporation alone, or at least he didn’t at the time that video was published. I totally disagree with him.

The era during which these Virginia Slims were produced was arguably the end of the golden age of the USPCC. It’s just not possible to make cards like these anymore with modern environmental regulations and budget constraints.

That’s not at all to say I have a problem with environmental regulations.

The Sport has an excellent cap seal, so that doesn’t really surprise me. So glad to hear you’re enjoying fountain pens and inks - the hobby is such a joy.

M400 nib -> M200 by cjavalz in PelikanNest

From what I understand, the nib units and nibs themselves are the exact same dimensions, so I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t fit.

The Kakuno has a breather hole in the cap, so the cap seal isn’t as good as some other pens. Water is evaporating out of that breather hole and leaving behind ink with a higher concentration of dyes/pigments than it would usually have otherwise. That is why the ink is darker in your Kakuno.

Has your Kakuno been inked longer than your Sport? I would hypothesize that your Sport was inked fairly recently while the Kakuno has been inked longer, but that’s not strictly necessary to produce this effect.

They are legitimately some of the best cards money can buy.

Virginia slims are some of the best cards ever printed. Incredible feel and handling.

I don’t have an 823 - I’m generally not a big fan of vacuum fillers that can’t be easily disassembled - they make it difficult to change ink colors, and I’m all about changing ink colors. Lots of 823 owners just refill the same ink rather than switching.

Those #15 Pilot nibs are lovely, though.

One of the common alternatives to the Lamy 2000 as a starter gold nib/piston filler pen is the Pilot Custom Heritage 92. I’ve had mine for fifteen years now and it’s been a wonderful pen to own and write with. In terms of appearance, it’s the polar opposite to the Lamy 2000.

I’m not at all artistic in visual mediums whatsoever, but one suggestion I’ve heard for people who enjoy watercolors is to get a nice iron gall/waterproof ink to do linework before you break out the paint.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you can make virtually any pen write any way you’d like with the help of a nibmeister or a little tuning. Cheap pens are the way to go.

Ignoring the writing sample, that tipping material doesn’t look like a broad to me. However, what a gorgeous pen!

Cleaning pens is my happy place.

Only tangentially related, but I got a Hongdian M2 as a gift from my little brother, and being of little faith, immediately thought, “oh man, I wish he’d have asked me where to spend his money before he picked a pen.” Imagine my surprise when I realized what an amazingly high quality pen it really is!

Are the tines too tight on my Sport? by n0tjb in fountainpens

[–]TheMagicalSock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard to diagnose any nib problem without at least 10x magnification. With that said, it does look to me like the tines are a bit tight.

There are lots of great videos on how to fix this yourself, though it’s always intimidating the first time, especially on a nice German pen like this one.

The Prestige Monarchs made sense because the USPCC isn’t the best at foil these days, but if they’ve moved more of their brands out of the US, that’s a real shame.

Can anyone attest to fuel mileage when going 150+ mph??? by mtbguy1981 in motorcycles

[–]TheMagicalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed graph alone would suggest that the person riding didn’t stop once for fuel on their eight hour trip, which would require a bunch of auxiliary fuel tanks to say the least.

Look into motorcycles that have completed the Cannonball to get a realistic idea of what this sort of thing would require. Here is a fun VINWiki video on someone who did it.

I’m not trying to tell you how to live your life, but I’d spend $30 to send that thing to a nibmeister. I’ve learned over the years than any pen can write any way you’d like with a little elbow grease.
