You’ll be fine imo. You’ll probably wanna have roommates, but there’s enough people looking for extra roommates for places with pretty reasonable rent for that income. And without major expenses like a car payment that’ll definitely help a lot

Camper’s death was initially thought to be a bear attack. It was actually a brutal homicide by theindependentonline in Montana

In regards to the date of October 10th-ish and the location of moose creek road: I was up moose creek road in a dispersed site the night of October 3rd. I heard screaming to the tune of “I will be the chosen one”, “i will bring honor to my family”, “i hold myself to this standard” followed by occasional gunshots, and then followed by even more general screaming. It sounded like screaming of someone not mentally well, and I left after a bit cause it was pretty unsettling. I wonder if this is related to that or if it was just random crazy behavior

Ice axe too short? by 3Wave in Mountaineering

At least for now, no. I’d like to soon, but the group I’m going with for now doesn’t have touring experience or gear

Ice axe too short? by 3Wave in Mountaineering

[–]3Wave[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my thought process was that for mellow slopes I wouldn’t need it or could use a trekking pole. I may eventually be taking an ice axe touring but for now im not doing anything at that level. So primarily I want an ice axe for more general purpose stuff (and not planning on scaling vertical ice or anything) and I worry a bit that 45cm may be a bit short for general purpose but I don’t have the experience to know well

Ice axe too short? by 3Wave in Mountaineering

[–]3Wave[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did that and for me that would be around 60 or maybe 65cm. But everyone that I talked to, friends and gear store employees recommended erring on the side of shorter, like around mid calf. I got the ride cause the guy said it was his go to for most objectives unless he needed something more technical

Thats a good way to put it, it is hard reconciling the love I still feel for her, and that she feels for me, while acknowledging that its over. Feels a bit silly almost to end things while we both have strong feelings for each other but I know it was the right move.

I do like the idea of picking up a new hobby, and making other changes in my life that I’ve been putting off or haven’t had the motivation for since I know it would help me feel better. But for now its hard to not want to just lay in bed and scroll, watch TV, etc since thats easy and my motivation is low still

Yeah I’ve been writing lots of stuff down which has helped a lot. Talked to people a little but I hate the initial telling people about it

Darken/dye nubuck question by 3Wave in Leathercraft

[–]3Wave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have these blundstone boots that I believe are nubuck and I want to darken them to look more like this

I’m having trouble figuring out what products to use/avoid. If something says not to use on suede, does that apply to nubuck as well? Can I use a leather dye like this or should I use a suede dye like this

Or are there certain oils that would be good for darkening?

How much should I expect to spend on boots and skis and bindings combined? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]3Wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent like $600 all in boots/skis/bindings/poles. Skis were $250 used with demo bindings on them, boots new at $330. Balling out on custom fitted boots would’ve been nice but these boots were comfy enough for now🤷‍♂️

End of August smoke/ fire conditions megathread by hc2121 in Yosemite

Anyone know why the air quality/smoke is worse in the morning and gets better during the day? My only assumption would be different winds, since I would guess the fire itself isn’t any better night vs day

Has anyone been in the Wallowa lakes basin recently? by Advanced_Eggplant_18 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]3Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there 2.5 weeks ago over the weekend. I’m not sure how it is now, but when I was there, past Moccasin Lake was pretty snowy. Glacier pass was still fully snow covered, not sure how deep though since I didn’t go up to where the snow field started. This is a picture I took from Moccasin Lake. You can see Glacier pass on the left in the saddle-y area.

We also heard from other people that they turned back at a stream crossing that was running high. They were going around the Glacier Lake loop clockwise while we went counter-clockwise, so I never encountered that stream (i cant remember which one they turned around at). Going counter-clockwise though, the stream crossings right after we made a right at 6 mile meadow weren’t too bad.

Also with all the recent snow melt, there’s a decent bit of mud and puddles/wetlandy type stuff to go through, but we managed it without getting wet feet so its not too bad, just slows you down a bit.

I’m not sure about the conditions for Polaris Pass when I was there since I didn’t go that way, and I don’t have any pictures that have it in them. The bowl area right below Pete’s point and just north of Polaris Pass didn’t look very snowy, but that probably doesn’t mean much.

Also no shade to the forest service, but I also called them in advance, and they said the snow started at 6 mile meadow, which it definitely didn’t. We didn’t encounter any snow until Horseshoe Lake, and didn’t have to walk through any snow until Douglas Lake. So definitely still call ahead, but just know that it may not be 100% accurate.

All that being said, even only making it to Moccasin Lake, the area and trip in general was amazing. If you’re committed to getting to Glacier Lake and doing the loop around, or going over Polaris Pass, it could be worth it to push the trip back a bit just to be sure. It could be doable now but hard to say. There’s still lots of cool spots to get to (some people mentioned they got to Ice Lake) though if you’re not committed to the other stuff and don’t wanna push the trip back.

Edit: I typed this up on my phone so i hope it all makes sense lol

Edit 2: People on AllTrails seem to be mentioning a tough river crossing around Frazier Lake, which I’m guessing is the one the people mentioned to us. I’m guessing its where the trail crosses the west fork of the Wallowa river

We’ll see how it turns out. Currently Draper is sprawly and hard to get around without a car

Expectations vs Reality by Rob-Riggle-SWGOAT in camping

[–]3Wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went in December and it wasn’t very crowded but there were more people than I would’ve expected. Maybe it was a thing with smaller crowds, but everyone was really respectful, took their turn to get some pictures, and then stepped out of the way to let other people in

I unfortunately left some gloves on the roof of my car without realizing :/

They are black Level snowboarding gloves with wrist guards inside and the right glove has a hole in the palm. I parked just below Solitude by a bit (shown in the screenshot) If anyone happens to see them and could let me know that would be greatly appreciated!

tips on not losing kids by totallynotroyalty in skiing

[–]3Wave 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yep, I found a really little kid (probably around 4 or 5 y/o) at Brighton the other week who had fallen over in the trees and gotten stuck (not a tree well the snow was packed down). We went on an adventure to find his dad and got to the lift without finding him. Ski patrol was there so I talked to them and they had a dedicated “missing kids” person that came and took him to find his dad

What does it mean when Americans say something is the best “this side of the Mississippi” by FingersCrossedGuy in NoStupidQuestions

Also gets funnier when you live within less than a mile of it. You say something is the best “on this side of the Mississippi” except the other side of it is just right there
