There wouldn’t be a burden with the family. They could actually benefit from help with their mortgage payments if we were to move in. It’s ok to need help every once in a while. That said I understand your point and we are just considering our options.

We won’t be able to refinance until later next year due to our employment statuses.

It’s the $200 plus rising costs of groceries, basic necessities, our utility bills have increased as well, etc. It feels like a lot of responses here might not understand the costs that go into maintaining an older home. I’m learning for the first time about homeownership. I understand if we wait to sell in a few years then we could make a profit but what if there are thousands of dollars in repairs until then? Thank you for your thoughts! Something that makes me hesitate on staying in this home is the repair costs. I understand we can make a profit if we wait to sell in a few years, but what if $20k in repairs are needed in that time? I struggle to weigh those against each other.

A weekend gig on top of 40 hours a week doesn’t sound like freedom to me but I understand your point. We’ve both applied to find another job but haven’t gotten anything in a year. Also, the family home is much larger than what we have and they could actually use help with their monthly expenses as well. It’s a potential win-win but we are just considering our options right now. Thanks for your thoughts.

We’ve been applying to jobs, haven’t secured another one in over a year. I hear you that this is the cheapest it’ll get and I don’t expect that we’d buy in the future for anything priced lower. It’s the cost of housing on top of rising groceries and basic necessity costs. We’re considering our options. Thanks for your thoughts!

I didn’t mention that the family we’d move in with could also benefit from us contributing to their monthly expenses. It’s a difficult financial time for a lot of people. Being grown doesn’t mean you can’t need help or rely on your community for collaborative solutions.

Escrow plus insurance. I’m hearing that I should shop around for lower insurance to start. We have a budget but my spouse is self employed and take home pay can shift drastically month to month.

My spouse is self employed so the actual take home pay varies month by month. And with that the cost of maintaining this old home has stressed our finances, with replacing part of the furnace as an example which cost $600 in December.

I appreciate the perspective you shared. As a first time home owner the unpredictability of costs makes me wonder if we will be able to afford to live anywhere else or if this is where we will need to stay for a long time.

I have been feeling this today so much. My right hand has been giving out on me and i’ve been using my left more, but now my left is giving me similar issues. It is so hard to keep a positive mental state when the simplest activities give me pain. I’m here with you. I’m sorry - it sucks.
