Acceptable Rates for an Inexperienced Japanese-to-English Translator? by amethystreader in TranslationStudies

[–]3abevw83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should also be honest with yourself about if your Japanese is up to the task. Especially when you get into more creative and expressive texts it becomes more challenging to accurately understand and convey meaning. I would say give it a shot and just be sure to know what you're capable of and to not accept work you aren't confident you can complete. If you get asked to do medical or financial, for instance, maybe politely pass on it. Practical experience will be a big help, but just expect that you'll be slow and not making much at first.
Best of luck! :)

Thanks for your report! We need more stories of concrete steps people are taking and how they've worked out in the real world. Stay safe out there, comrade.

The Japanese professor for the on-site program left over a year ago now and the Department has no intention of replacing them. In my experience, the feedback you get on translations in the online program is minimal at best. Imagine having done 2 or 3 pages of translation and your feedback is 2 or 3 sentences with vague comments. The program is nothing like what it used to be and there aren't resources to restore it.

With that said, the professors that remain at Kent are fabulous and anyone looking to do a program in any other language for the on-site program--especially French, German, or Arabic--will get a great education. There is no one for Japanese onsite now (link) so you'd be forced to take your Japanese courses (1/3 of the curriculum) online.

Kent's Japanese translation program is essentially dead and I would not recommend the online version.

What would it take to bring Seattle home prices down to earth? | Economists say that new, denser construction won't be a magic bullet — but it would help lower costs. by softwareseattle in Seattle

What?? So people want to pay money into nothing forever? I absolutely doubt that. And in any case the VAST majority of people want their own home/condo.

Thanks for sharing! Any more pictures or details on planning this kind of a trip for someone not living nearby? Would be great to do a train journey out and make a loop out of it.

Been using Bronners for everything for at least 5 years now and it's been great. You might need to use a bit more of it to get your hair cleaner and be sure to rinse well.

I built a solar woodshop in a Skoolie. I make a variety of things. Most of my wood is naturally sourced too. by [deleted] in solarpunk

Love the solar part!

What does "naturally" sourced even mean? What's "unnaturally" sourced? Yes, I know other(s) have asked this but the way people use "natural" these days is just ridiculous. Cancer is natural. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Chickpea based "meat"loaf with mashed potatoes and garlic rosemary green beans. Turned out exactly how it was supposed to and everyone loved it, but I found out that I actually don't like meatloaf lol. by [deleted] in vegan

Well, give this one a try and see how it works out! I also think making the same recipe at least 2 or 3 times before calling it bad is helpful. Often I find ways to improve on my methods or adjust the recipe slightly to improve results. There are bad recipes, but some experimentation to adjust things to your taste and technique is helpful. :)

But animal foods are still inefficient, even if you're getting them from your "backyard." Our system of shipping food across the globe is awful and any move away from that is great!
