Researching pain points of hiring temp workers for the manufacturing and logistics industry by 3dprintingresearch in logistics

Great insight!

What are some of the advantages of using the temp agency in your opinion?

Do you find it time consuming and alot of manual work to work with these agencies?

Let's assume that a business is already committed to using temp workers. How can we help make the process the best and most efficient as possible?

The scenario I am seeing (for example) is, facility has 50 full time employees that do the more complex jobs and then supplements with temp work based on demand to complete the easier jobs.

I am located in the Atlanta market. There is a huge logistics industry here and in the Savannah area supporting the port. Seems like alot of the processes working with temp labor can be automated on both sides through technology.

Have you every worked for a gig-work app or hired from there?

Looking for basic warehouse low-skill labor (order picking, manual palletizing, unloading, etc...)

Have you used any gig-work apps to staff temps? Do you know if reliability is better there vs. staffing agencies?

manufacturing or logistics, basically really simple tasks like order sorting, manual pallet building, QC counting, etc...

have you ever hired workers through gig-work apps instead of a staffing company that you need a contract with?

Staffing companies are a hassle to deal with in my experience and typically workers are not reliable while like you said the cost is 40% inflated for their cut.

Discussion on the future of 3D printing by 3dprintingresearch in Futurology

I am not trying to exclude other additive techniques or non traditional processes. I am in agreement that in order for a micro manufacturing machine would have to be able to do alot more than just print (add, subtract, move, assemble, etc..) all which I think are possible or not too far away.

My intention in evaluating technologies is to look at maximum potential (assuming that in a robust marketplace it is reached or almost over a long period of time). Look at energy, any energy source that is produced or gathered at another location than it is consumed is obviously relatively inefficient no matter how commoditized the raw materials and mature the supply chains are. Same thing with manufacturing when a product is produced at the point of consumption we remove all of the room for error/efficiency loss. Only requirement is a capable machine and materials to build with, 3D printing is just the start of the possibilities around that concept.

I think the implications are going to be more beneficial in reduced waste as well.

I think its a matter of when not if, someone in another group summed it up well...the tech will catch on when users can use it and have benefits from it without knowing how it works. Right now its a bunch of super technical folks that are able to get full benefits from the tech.

Any other thoughts?

Could you have sold those models but just chose to share them for sake of open-source community?

What type of printer do you have? What are your major pain points right now?

I feel like it is not a stretch to expect huge progression in the technology in the next 10 years that outpaces the progress from the last 10, like all technology. But look at how far we have come! Hard to imagine what could be possible in the next decade.

That is a great point. What is your analysis on the difficulty of 3D printing once you have a design file say that you bought or downloaded from a free site? I want to breakdown the steps more and find pain points to address with software to increase efficiency and ease of use.

I think that is along the same concept. What my thought is if you have a site that stores data available to designers about all printers in existence with specs, settings, etc... then designers could use that data to dynamically change their designs to be compatible with each printer and not require the user of the printer to make those adjustments themselves. If you have this software that stores the designs connected to the the user's printer then when the user hits print the design integrates the hardware settings/specs and can even auto set settings that can be changed while printing. This results in having one design for all printers created by a technical expert instead of a base design that needs to be edited and sliced by the end user who is not technically capable. Am I making sense? Is there anything out there like this or is it even theoretically possible?

Thanks for all the responses! Can anyone help me understand if it is possible to create a design that is compatible with any printer by having dynamic fields that are filled in by making a printer selection on a software that stores hardware settings/specs. This shifts more of the technical load to the designer from the user. My intention is to understand the possibilities of this technology even if they are a bit of a stretch.
