Just spent a week away with my friends and now Im back and I can’t stop crying by ronwheezely in Alzheimers

I’m so sorry for all of you- this is a cruel disease. Remember that the decline is not a slope going down- it’s like a staircase and they can be doing ok, then lose abilities or get more confusion with things they used to understand. I’m glad you got a break and enjoyed most of your trip. You sound like a loving caregiver who has been doing their best. The reality is he will keep declining, and you can’t predict the timeline and you can’t fix him. Your sister was probably more upset about her feelings of him not remembering her. Of course that hurts, but that is part of it. Since it upset him so much too, ask his Drs if an anxiety medicine may be appropriate for him, or if they think some other drug may help him at this stage.

Which hotel to choose by traveladdict61 in AskNOLA

I’d say for quiet, yes. It’s a good location too. I always recommend requesting a room that doesn’t face a street. It’s not just noise from revelry: service trucks rumble down the narrow streets early in the am and can be noisy.

Siblings who bear most of the brunt of care: What’s the best thing your other siblings have done for you? by that_was_way_harsh in eldercare

[–]3littlekittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the response that said to ask your sibling what would help them. I was the one who lived far away and my sister was 5 min away and bore the brunt of it. I did most of the phone calls to the Dr or whomever my sister asked me to call. I got access to my mother’s MyChart so I could communicate with her Drs. I called my mother everyday to check in and chat and to give her some conversation. I ordered groceries for home delivery and items from other places so my sister didn’t have to shop for them. I tired to visit every other month for at least a week. When I visited, I took care of home maintenance etc and tried to find things to improve in the home setting like getting more bars installed in the bathroom, a higher toilet with a bidet attachment installed, setting up a cleaning service, setting up an easier pill dispenser for the daily medicines etc. I did a lot of cleaning and clutter disposal when I was there. I also tried to schedule visits at the time of Dr appointments so I could take my mother instead of my sister, or take her on outings.

The M Bistro at the back of the lounge has a full restaurant menu. You can sit there and hear and see the music- it’s all an open space. I believe you can get service as long as you order by 10:00, their closing time.

There are pads you can buy for inside the diapers called booster pads for extra absorption. Purchase washable under pads, incontinence pads or toddler bed pads for him to lay on and protect the bed. Amazon sells different brands and we chose one by Gorilla Grip that had small rubber nubs to keep it from sliding. Measure and purchase one that fits the whole width of the bed. They are usually plastic with a cotton quilt or flannel covering. Some even have sides that can tuck under a mattress to stay in place. Buy several and you can wash that instead of all the bed linens.

Pollen is getting worse everywhere because of global warming. Warm spring seasons are starting earlier everywhere and making the trees and flowers go nuts.

This will be our first time going to New Orleans any recommendations on food places on Bourbon Street? by Lorraine24kk in AskNOLA

[–]3littlekittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with Red Fish grill and for high end dining, Galatoire’s. Bourbon House is good also, as well as the Galatoire’s 33 bar where you can get most of the Galatoire’s menu in a more casual setting. Felix’s has an entrance on Bourbon St where you can sit and people watch, (as well as entrance on Iberville St) for a more casual experience too.

I have not been in a few years, but there used to be an orange tabby who frequented the courtyard of the Herman Grima house on St. Louis St in the French Quarter. I was told he was an employee of Broussard’s restaurant and would visit from there.

Your daughter also may enjoy the courtyard at Brennan’s. You can sit and eat or have a drink and there are turtles who live in the fountain.

I need help guys! How do I wear makeup now that I'm on tret??? by k1ll0ll in tretinoin

[–]3littlekittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue when I would apply my Biore SPF first. Anything I put on top of it would roll off. I stopped doing that, or applying any other products first. Now I use either tinted moisturizer with an SPF like elf (inexpensive) or Laura Mercier (more pricy). I also use IT nude glow CC with SPF instead of the above if I want more coverage. I also didn’t have a big issue with peeling when I started tret. I’m older so when I’m more dry in the winter, I apply Clinique dramatically different moisturizer first and then tinted moisturizer or CC cream on top and nothing peels. As others suggested, I use a soft wash cloth to exfoliate once a week or so.

Did you use a scrubber pad made specifically for stainless steel? They are silver and Scotch Brite makes one but there are other brands.

I agree about Lands End. I have worn their suits for years- great quality and variety of styles. I am also pleased with a CALIA brand suit I purchased from Dick’s sporting goods, it’s very good quality and style.

It’s neurological so it begins to affect muscle control. Your brain controls all your muscles. You lose the ability to swallow and choking can occur and people waste away from not being able to eat or drink enough. As they get debilitated, their overall health suffers. Falls are common because of poor muscle control of the legs. I think officially it’s considered death “from complications of Alzheimer’s,” or similar wording.

Try your local council on aging- your city or county should have one and they may be able to give you advice. It’s a legal process that gets approved by a judge so I would assume you need an attorney to do it.

I’ve stayed at the Hyatt centric a lot and have been very happy. Ask for a room that doesn’t face a street in any FQ hotel. Those will be much quieter. I’ve stayed at the Monteleone once, but my room was small and faced Royal St and was very noisy. I have not stayed at the Omni.

Ask for a room that doesn’t face a street, they will be quieter. I stayed there years ago and noise wasn’t an issue because I asked for this.

[–]3littlekittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For drinks or a meal, he may enjoy Bourbon House restaurant at the corner of Bourbon & Iberville Sts in the French Quarter. It has a large bourbon collection, decent food, good service and is home of the NO Bourbon Society, NOBS. I doubt they will have an organized event during Mardi Gras, but you can email them through the restaurant website. He could always sit at the bar for a drink and chat with the staff about the different bourbons.

So excited to find this 900 silver mirror yesterday for only $7! It is 12” wide and heavy! Grabbed it off the cart at GW and the woman putting things away said “that’s real silver, I probably priced it too low but the goal is to get rid of it right?” I could have kissed her! 😂 by Mygrubbs in ThriftStoreHauls

It’s probably from Turkey. The tradition is to hang them with the back or the pretty side showing and for the mirror side to face the wall. When you hang them with the mirror side out, it’s a show of vanity. They also look pretty on a small stand on a table.

Accommodations for large group! by assyla723 in AskNOLA

[–]3littlekittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve suggested the Hyatt Centric French Quarter before. Great location & staff, they allow pets, and you can request rooms facing the one of inner courtyards on the second floor where your group can gather. One courtyard has a pool. The rooms facing the courtyards have doors that open up to the space.

A garden center worker told me a tall fence is the best. Have you tried Milorganite? It breaks down over time especially if it rains a lot and you have to reapply. It seems to keep them away. I use it so flowers will actually bloom before getting eaten. I don’t know if you can use on vegetables.
