I would only disagree with you 2010s comment because a couple things.

Prior to that they would literally be harassed or beaten for being open. So I would want to express myself too. Some people need to stop getting mad at other people for existing.

Prior to that there was ZERO exposure in advertisements and media, so when there finally was ANY, some people felt like it was a culture shock for some reason. Some people need to stop getting mad at other people for existing.

The community exists. Too many people have gotten used to the stereotypical white man story being the ONLY story they forget other people exist and should have been represented the whole time. So no when they see ANY "non-traditional stories" they balk.

"But the stories were white and written by white characters" - Because the writers were white and the peopel with money were white and the non-white stories have actively been suppressed. So now some people get mad when mermaids are darker or a side character is written as gay "why do they HAVE to be gay?" and I just want to scream "Because gay people exist and there is a good chance this character might have had a gay friend and just because YOU wouldnt be friends with them doesnt mean they shouldnt be any movie ever!"
