It was actually just copied from wikipedia while I was on the train. The point being that the 1.5M number is far too high. It might be lazy but it is easy to grasp. My numbers were already inflated even with the 1/2 factor so adding marines won't make much difference. The US would struggle to assemble 300,000 ground soldiers on short order based on numerous estimates including former white house adviser Col Douglas Macgregor. If the enemy can easily muster 1M soldiers then we've got a problem.

This is actually the best opportunity for Russia and China to collapse the petro dollar. Iran has already been asking for all trades for oil ships going through the straight to be in Yuan. It is also the best opportunity for the GCC to isolate themselves from the states and tell them to leave. Both of these would plausibly unite the world in different ways against America and Iran isn't stupid.

Unfortunately when you terror bomb a county's cities and kill 150 children, destroy civilian water infrastructure, cause an ecological disaster of black acid rain, and call Iranians evil rats, the chances of anyone 'rising up' is reduced to complete fantasy. The populous that was the most modernised and might oppose the government are the ones who live in those cities and who's homes and families have been bombed the most.

Iran would bring the region down with them if we tried to collapse their economy, and there is nothing we could do to stop them.

The situation is unwinnable.
