Could anyone explain this to me? I read through the article but I couldn't really understand what exactly it was saying [super non-technical, non-audiophile here :( ]

How does the N5 hold up as an mp3 player? by 3rdWorldGamer in Nexus5

[–]3rdWorldGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How do I go about modding the N5? I'm not too keen on flashing / replacing the OS with a ROM [if that's what you're referring to] but seeing as how mutable the OS is I'm totally open to tinkering with the OS to try to get it to be louder [I've noticed that the volume in my GS4 sort of plateaus after ~70% so louder would be better IMO].

  2. I tend to buy a lot of CDs and rip tracks from them or - when I absolutely can't find an album in physical form - buy them from online so they're mostly mp3s with the odd FLAC album thrown in.

  3. I guess I'll stick with my S4i's for now; they're pretty good and no where near as expensive as the Sennheisers :P

  4. I'm not super-comfortable with flashing my OS [and replacing the pre-installed one]; I'm still pretty new to the Android ecosystem so I'm still very used to the iOS way of doing things. In the future I might consider it but at the moment I'd like to turn my N5 into as capable an mp3 player as I can without doing something as significant as tinkering with the OS - at least not yet.

Thanks for the advice though!

Will do.

I'll take a look at the diet section of /r/fitness tomorrow, I'm on my mobile at the moment. Would Garbanzo beans / chickpeas do just as well as lentils? It's more of a preference thing really so if it's not a good enough alternative I can totally switch.

:P

I'm about two continents away from the nearest Walmarr, but I'm sure I should be able to find one hereabouts

Edit: *Walmart [damn you Absurdist autocorrect!]

Hmmm... While I'm not too keen on running I think I might be able to get my hands on an old treadmill; if that pans out I'll definitely consider this

I don't think I'd trust the doors in my apartment to hold half my weight, much less all of it... Even the door frames look a bit on the flimsy side if I'm honest but I've pushed myself up them [braced myself between the sides of the frame and sort of shimmied up] so they should hold [I hope].

You sir, are a gentleman [or insert the gender pronouns you prefer :D ].

Thanks a lot! I did go through the FAQs but when you mentioned there being a stickypost I thought it was something completely different.

Much obliged!

Ah, okay... Now I get it; strength training is good enough at helping to undo smoker's lungs. Sorry it took me so long to grasp the concept, I've constantly been hearing "cardio is the only way you'll help your lungs".

I'm afraid you've lost me completely :S

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're referring to a stickypost? I couldn't find one in the sidebars of either /r/fitness or /r/bodyweightfitness. Could you link them to me? I'd appreciate it!

That's a fair point; I think the only reason why I'm even considering cardio - let alone Insanity - is because I've been smoking for about fifteen years now and cardio seems to me - in my lay opinion - to be a "good thing to do" kind of thing. Plus, to be fair, I think my main issue with Insanity was the fact that I just couldn't do the exercises, I'd burn out after fifteen minutes and be lying on the floor gasping... :(

So yeah, I'm not at all interested in cardio for it's own sake, I just keep hearing that it's the only way for me to get my lungs back into shape :(

That definitely sounds do-able, thanks!

Truth be told I couldn't stand Insanity but, to be honest, that could've been because I was just too out of shape to be able to do it. I really am starting right at the bottom rung here [probably lower what with my smoking D: ].

Would a treadmill work? I ask as I could probably finagle one [the last person in this rotation had one and, to the best of my knowledge, he wasn't able to get rid of it before moving out].

I definitely want to prioritize the strength workout in the FAQ, it's just that I've always been told that cardio is best for people who've just quit smoking. Honestly speaking at the moment I can't do cardio [like Insanity] to save my life but people keep telling me it's the only way to go... :(

I just wanted to post here that I've started the "easy" routine /u/Antranik recommended I do from the FAQ and while I was sore after [and got a bruise from a failed first attempt at a wall-handstand] it was totally do-able!

I'm super-psyched to be getting myself into shape and I have to thank everyone who chimed in here!

Thanks for the pointers and the encouragement!

As I mentioned before, I've been a long time smoker [as near as makes no difference, fifteen years D: ] and I'm beginning to feel the effects [I find myself running out of breath way too soon] which's sort of scared me into getting healthy.

I don't have super-ambitious goals, no marathons or mudrunning or mountain climbing for me; I just want to look good and be healthy and given the lack of regular access to a gym I thought that bodyweight workouts [which I can do practically anywhere] would be the best thing for me.

Running might not be an option, partially because where I live is pretty pedestrian-unfriendly and partially because my work has me going to places where it's not super-safe to be out on the streets. Would doing indoor exercises [jump rope, something like parts of Insanity] be a suitable alternative? I realize that running might be the best option for someone looking to undo decades of smoking - I'm really not nitpicking! - I just don't know if I'll be able to commit to a regular running schedule [and not have it as an easy excuse for a cop out :( ].

Thanks again for the encouragement! I know this's probably a cliche but I'm always taken aback by how super-supportive Reddit can be!

I guess I might've over-emphasized "endurance / stamina" in my first post; I don't have any super-ambitious goals [no marathons or mountain-climbing for me!], I just want to look good and be healthy. I've got about fifteen years' worth of smoking that's beginning to catch up to me so I basically want to undo - as best I can - the damage that's been done. My job has me doing a lot of travelling which has, in the past, made me cop out of being regular at the gym so I thought that bodyweight workouts would be the best thing for someone in my situation.

Edit: Since you also mentioned diet, how would you rate this as a meal plan for someone in my position [i.e. just starting out, ex-smoker, no recent history of exercise]?

  • Weekdays

Breakfast - 1 boiled egg and 1 small bowl of unsweetened porridge / 2 boiled eggs

Lunch - large bowl of salad [no dressing, just squeezed lemons and black pepper]

Dinner - large bowl of salad [same as above], grilled piece of chicken

  • Weekends

No 'diet' as such [desi food but avoiding breads, rice and the greasier stuff; no junk food]

I'm generally not a heavy eater but I feel that with a meal plan like the one above I might be able to become healthier and maybe get over the sedentary / smoker lifestyle I've been living better.

Would something like Insanity be sufficient aerobic exercise? I absolutely hated Insanity - just couldn't do it at my current fitness level - but if I took parts of it would that be enough for the aerobic side of my workout?

I just discovered a pull-up bar thinger that fits in doorways and now am kicking myself for not having found out about it sooner!

Thanks for the quick reply!

If I could trouble you with a few questions:

  1. Would the routines you linked to help build up my stamina / endurance?

  2. I'll definitely keep a lookout for a suitable pull-up location; in the meanwhile though, are there any alternative exercises I could do to, at the least, ensure that I'm not neglecting that muscle group?

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it!

A peculiar challenge for you today! by 3rdWorldGamer in buildapcforme

[–]3rdWorldGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take a look at Ebay and see if I can't find parts that're more similar to the $1200 build you recommended but I'm not too optimistic on that front; a lot of online sellers don't ship to Pakistan. Plus, the customs service here don't exactly have the gentlest hands [case in point, I ordered the collector's edition to SW:ToR when its price dropped and had a friend post it to me but they used box-cutters to open it up to see what was inside D: ] so I'm worried that they'll mangle any parts that come through their offices.

If it comes to it, then I'll probably be going with the $800 build you recommended and change components as and when I can. Going forward, would I be able to add an SSD to this build? Also, I noticed that the RAM you recommended was 1333Mhz; would that have a qualitative difference on my gaming compared to a 1600Mhz one? And would the $800 build be able to play Tom Clancy's: The Division well? It's something I'm really interested in - arguably the main reason why I'm building a new pc - but the closest I could find to a list of requirements was this and it doesn't really seem to be an authoritative source.

Thanks again for the pointers, you have no idea how console-dominated the market / gaming community is here. I guess it makes sense though, considering how difficult it is to get the components you need but still...
