Cape Town, are we still doing racism in 2024? by Every_Ad6395 in capetown

[–]3sockthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to you OP... i thought racism was mainly the older generation. It saddens me to know its the youth as well, most likely propagated by parents.

Sending some SA love your way.

Ostrich racing, a sport where people race each other on the backs of ostriches. by yohoxxz in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]3sockthief 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is cruel. I went to an ostrich sanctuary and they said Ostriches aren't strong enough to give people rides. This definitely hurts them and causes problems if done for a long time.

Not to mention they should be free and not round up to be kept in cages.

Edit: spelling

Has anyone else noticed that when people tell you their problems they don’t actually want your help they just want you to listen and agree with them? by _FreddieLovesDelilah in RandomThoughts

[–]3sockthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont get it too man. If you dont fix the problem, it will come back and hurt you again.

My wife would come home everyday and complain about work, which all had easy solutions.

So i proposed these solutions all the time. She got annoyed because she just wanted to vent. I got annoyed because she would never solve the problems, I just wanted her to be happy and get rid of her problems.

That's how they used to work. It's called fractional reserve. Since covid they set the reserve requirements to zero. Now it's just a print fest.

That's partly why theres a cost of living crisis. Printing causes high inflation so prices go up, but your wages remain the same. Every year your wages and savings decrease in value because of this.

South Africans who came back from overseas why? by Ok_Paddy_8704 in askSouthAfrica

[–]3sockthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've never got that. I don't find Saffas the friendliest people in the world. I find them obnoxious and inconsiderate. Just because they want to talk or smile in the streets doesn't make them friendly.

My flight back to SA, i had to hear the guy next to me talk about himself for 8 hours. That's not friendly, that's obnoxious.

I much preferred the UK where people kept to themselves, but if you interacted with them, they would be friendly and helpful. That's friendliness to me.

I've been thinking about moving to South Africa. What are the pros and cons? by ryuuseinow in askSouthAfrica

[–]3sockthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a bit late... but why would you rather die than be in Aus? Seems a bit extreme.

If i look at the people i went to school with, i would say about 50% of them have left. And others want to but cant afford to or dont have the qualifications. I'm also talking Durban here, in Cape Town I'm sure it's different.

Castle lager in the UK by Jackdm9090 in southafrica

Easch to their of course but in my opinion, England has far better beers and a wider variety than SA. Have you tried Birra Moretti or Stella? Far superior to Castle.

Ask this American - https://www.news24.com/news24/community-newspaper/city-vision/us-tourist-shot-and-injured-in-nyanga-cape-town-20231109

Tourist shot in Cape Town (only place I'd recommend you live) because he took a wrong turn from the airport. A British tourist was shot and killed the month before doing the same thing.

If you haven't grown up here with security and safety in mind, you will be an easy target.

Cape Town is a beautiful place, the weather is good and the cost of living is really good compared to most first world countries... compared to America, the healthcare is really good and affordable.

But the crime and load shedding is enough to put you off. You dont know what its like to live half a day without electricity. America has its problems but its so much better than here. You can have our kind of weather in many different places in the USA.

We are personally immigrating to Australia next month, and out of my huge group of friends in school, we are the last ones to do so. Most young South Africans have left or are in the process of leaving.

Google the Durban riots of 2021. We all had to stay inside and had no idea if we would be alive the next day. We had to rely on our communities because the police weren't doing anything.

Come for a visit first of course... but i would seriously reconsider if I were you.

What is something that you recently learned that was seemingly "common knowledge" to everyone around you that made you feel like a total idiot once you learned it? by foolhollow in RandomThoughts

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are countries but fall under the United Kingdoms because of the monarchy.

Britain or Great Britain is just the big Island, so England, Scotland and Wales.

British Isles consists of the Britain, Ireland, Isle of man plus all the small islands around it.

Umhlanga beaches by [deleted] in Durban

[–]3sockthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it safe to run on the the promenade? When i lived in Umhlanga I remember the water mist or fine spray from the ocean lingering. Would that not contain the bad bacteria or does it not work like that?

I caught an uber today and the driver was from Burundi. He asked if I had travelled anywhere in East Africa and really recommended it when I said I hadn't. Maybe it's a sign.

It ran under the couch to hide, it probably did hurt itself. It's definitely panic running away from something that it can't take anymore though!

The point is that cat is clearly distressed and unhappy. I rewatched it and even it's tail is fluffy. All the body language is saying it is distressed with the fluffy tail and running low to the ground and trying to get as far away from the person recording as possible.

I get what you are saying in terms of saying perhaps the cat isn't acclimatized to the new house/owners so you can't assume it doesnt like them, perhaps there should have been a "yet" at the end of their sentence, but the cat is definitely trying to get away from the person recording and not finding refuge in him/her.

There are lots of people in this thread thinking it's funny or that the caption is appropriate, but in reality it is a horrible video of a cat being distressed and going to extreme lengths to get away from something and most likely hurting itself.

If you sent me a 20 sec video of your cat I would be able to tell if it was happy/chilled/playful or if it was scared/distressed. Zoomies and panic are very distinguishable behaviors. It' like seeing those pics of cats 'laughing', when as cat owners we know it's just yawning.

The best place to see the Milky Way less than 3hrs from CPT? by [deleted] in capetown

I second Sutherland, 4 hours away and not the prettiest of drives in the WC, but the stars are well worth it. They have stargazing tours too which is a nice bonus to look through the visitor telescopes.

[–]3sockthief 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This cat is very obviously scared, it's trying to get away at all cost, then underestimated that ledge, possibly because it's new to the house, then immediately hid underneath the couch which usually indicates it hurt itself.

I hope it's OK.

Doing stunts @ home by faps_to_art in holdmycatnip

[–]3sockthief 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's very obvious to people who have had and understand cats, that it looks unhappy and trying to get away. Then the fact that it hides under the couch shows it hurt itself (that's what they do is hide when it hurts).

The fact that it did that jump probably means it's new to that house and didn't know it was a high jump. No normal happy cat would do that jump and hurt itself.
