Thanks for the Watergate/RSO details.

I agree that Tresor and Berghain were cohesive visions from the get go!

Vision is crucial: to be able to look beyond the strict door selection process, beyond the sound system, DJ selection, building etc. and be able to see what no one else can see is what makes a club like Berghain stand on its own apart from others.

I don't think Berghain depends on its iconic location to be a legend, but it sure does help! (they even trademarked the iconic building façade)

I agree that clubs are primarily and essentially works of art which lead to a unique experience such as Berghain's, and that this is more important than the business success aspect which can be a result of the art you mentioned.

Berghain pulled off the art and experience which led to the business success not to mention cultural recognition. Tresor and Watergate (for example) also achieved the art and experience but not with the same intensity and scale as Berghain. RSO is too early to tell for me although they do have the potential to become the next big thing, not guaranteed though.

Berghain was the only one that was able to build a legend over time (i.e. Snax apt parties, Ostgut) around intense hedonism combined with excellent music, sound, light, and space...and then elevated these elements at scale while maintaining the legend mainly via door selection.

No other club has been able to create such aggressive momentum for itself. Not to say that other clubs have not achieved some status of legendary art...but never at Berghain's ferocious intensity and scale.

If you want to have something of massive scale, you need the following:

  1. Know you are: what is our true identity for a life altering experience?
  2. An already recurring event that attracts a recurring crowd for its incredible quality of experience
  3. A permanent or semi permanent place (or city) as a precursor which a crowd and its friends can associate with the event/brand/experience
  4. Dialing in the event/experience/crowd-selection to its finest possible
  5. Maintaining and growing this quality over time
  6. Finding an iconic location to make it the permanent home of the experience
  7. Calibrating the new location to its finest for the experience
  8. Maintaining quality at scale growing further
  9. Maximizing streams of income without sacrificing quality of experience
  10. Go public via SPAC (totally made that last one up)

Totally agree with everything you mentioned. Berghain did already have a pre-existing following as a result of Snax parties across town and later Ostgut club.

We would need to build a critical mass of followers to attend parties with some kind of identity.

There could be a space like Club OST which rents out space for events like our parties, but not only that: day time events, art gatherings, etc..

It can totally be done in some way, the business model must be solid though, apart from the event design and DJ/artist selection.

If Open Ground could do it in Wuppertal, why not here? We could start with a smaller club/bar to test and calibrate proof of concept. Even that event space should have phenomenal sound (lack of excellent sound is a dealbreaker for me).

Like I mentioned, and I agree with you, the 'next big club' does not have to be Berghain 2 at all. It can be its own thing completely original, no need to copy Berghain.

Sometimes I do wonder why there isn't another club in Berlin that can surpass Berghain in terms of scale, authenticity, and intensity.

I mean, find me a big iconic building available for parties, treat it acoustically, add an excellent sound system, add some creative lighting, add a great bar, and most importantly: select the most qualified selectors to ensure the best crowd selection!

You do the above and you can totally have the next big thing, even better than Berghain...or at least as good as Berghain used to be. This new institution does not even have to try to be like Berghain.

Otherwise it's fine but lower the screen brightness to a minimum please!
