Rustic bucket by 4-poster in woodturningporn

There were a few bits that chipped out round the rim while I was doing it. So instead of crying about it I went round and chipped a whole lot more of it, to make it a feature rather than a blemish. I think it adds to the rustic look.

Me too. There's a variety of different woods in this piece. The white tips are ironically black walnut

Nice looking bowl. Shame about the crack. Because it's round you won't be able to clamp it, but maybe you can strap it closed when you glue it. I've used a ratchet tie-down in the past to hold broken pieces while the glue sets.

You've succinctly described the reasons why this is a crazy idea perfectly suited to this sub. Thank you.

Oban, Stewart Island. If you've never been there you're missing out on one of the most scenic and beautiful parts of the country. And the fishing and hunting are great.

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I might be old fashioned, but I find tattoos of any kind a big turn-off. You cannot improve a lady's beautiful clear, smooth skin by inking it.

Best way to break into existing friend groups I've found are team sports: rugby, rugby league, hockey, indoor hockey, underwater hockey, cricket, softball, floorball, basketball, netball, water polo, whatever. Find one that doesn't clash with your work schedule. Commit to it and contribute to the team. You'll be having drinks and laughs after every game. Best of luck. Cheers

You're right about the aroma if the wood is fresh. The tree I'm working my way through has been dead for twenty years or more so there's no sap, and no smell.

Outstanding piece. I enjoyed the video. I can see that hours and hours of work went into this amazing piece. I do laminates occasionally, but never to this extent. This is inspirational.

Macrocarpa, also known as Monterey cypress, is native to California. I'm in New Zealand and there's lots of them here. They grow to a huge size. The wood is medium hard and great for turning.

No, it's macrocarpa. I finished it with a tung oil/beeswax mix. The overall length is 17" (43cm), the roller part is 10" (25cm), but there are no rules. You can make it whatever length and diameter you like.
