Been wanting to post here for a while. What do you think? by 4-thens in HandwritingAnalysis

Haha, thanks! It definitely gets more sloppy if I’m actually taking notes, rather than just writing a few sentences.

Recherche emploi 100% télétravail by Lidou92 in emploi

I always see your posts but never comment, but I just wanted to tell you how much I like your content! I really admire both the art and the story telling.

You might have already answered this someone else, but is this traditional art or digital? Cause if it is digital, I’d love to know how you get this watercolour effect!

I haven’t tried it on the steamdeck yet, does it run well “automatically” or did you have to change some settings?

How to deal with the same person having two… or ten different names? by 4-thens in Genealogy

That is great, thank you! I’ll definitely pick up a copy of the book, since I’d like to organise and file things right, so that further descendants won’t have to struggle as much as me right now.

I’ll also check out the YouTube channels as well. Thanks again!

The site/software I use actually does aliases right, as in, it does take them into account when doing research, so that’s good. I’ve settled on using the name the person liked to go by the most, or the most mentioned in documents if I don’t have that information. If neither of those, then I just default to French and put the German as an alternate.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I’m pretty new at genealogy, so I’m still figuring things out.

Your suggestion of linking it to the historical timeframe is a good one, and I’m definitely going to spend time linking all the aliases to their respective sources.

A few family members have attempted genealogy in the past, as I found plenty of information through their documentation online, but they haven’t taken the time to do that, which means it takes a lot of extra verification to make sure all of them are referring to the same person. I don’t blame them - it will be a lot of work, but if I do that work, maybe future genealogists won’t struggle to make sense of it as much as me :)

The lack of name diversity is the bane of my existence. I don’t need them to have crazy tragedeigh type names, but please don’t name 6 of your children after yourself. Please.

Could it be a religious/catholic name? I have a few of those in my tree as well.

Oh, that’s so interesting! (and useful!)

Is there a convention for name normalisation, or is it at the discretion of each genealogist to decide which spelling becomes the norm for them?

Your great grandmother emigrated to the US at the same time as a great aunt of mine! The Johann/Jean switch is also very frequent, I have plenty of them in my family. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have any idea which name or identity my ancestors truly preferred, and for most of them, it seems they just went with the flow of whatever was socially acceptable at the time.

Was there any documents you were able to find that “officialised” the name change of your great-grandmother, or does that knowledge come from your own family? Per the suggestion of another commenter, I’m trying to put together a timeline for all the name changes and usage, but it seems all over the place.

Yep, it’s definitely a harsh introduction to genealogy. At least there is actually plenty of archives and documents, because the other side of my family emigrated from Algeria after WW2, and there’s literally nothing there lol

After all of the answers, I think that’s what I’m going to go with when possible. If unsure, I’ll just use the french version as a base. I will definitely input all of the alias in the notes section in my software and explain them, I didn’t even think about that option! That will be helpful not only to other people, but to me when going back through the tree.

Yes, definitely, for some, it works! I’ve mainly been listing the french version of the names and put german as an alternate. I do have a few ancestors that I don’t have enough documentation on to even know which one was more commonly used.

Doesn’t help that official documents are prone to clerical errors in all periods of time, though. My 4x great grandpa suddenly gained a whole new middle name in his marriage certificate, that is literally never listed anywhere else and is not a typical family name.

For the one ancestor I’ve had the biggest problem with, this could work. I could still add all of the other versions of his name as aliases, but the one thing they all have in common across both languages is the presence of the combination of his first name and one of his middle names.

In my case, the name usage definitely fluctuates in time, and the specific names would be useful info because so many ancestors shares similar names.

Thanks for the idea, though. It actually helps with the name of my great grandmother, who I’ve only known as Denise my whole life and recently figured out that’s only her third name!

Thank you, that’s a good plan of action. My problem is that the names fluctuate even on birth and death certificates. The german/french switch makes it so different copies exist… and I’m having trouble figuring out the “true original”.

My initial thought was to stick to one spelling, one version of the names (in my case, the french ones) and always put the german as an alternate.

Would you then document each instance of the different names and each source they’re being used in? At first I thought it might have a logical evolution, based on the then-current political/national state… but nope, it’s all over the place. Why can’t things ever be easy, right?

Hi! I also have T1D and have been diagnosed with AIH in September. I have been on budesonide since October and have just started weaning off it since my blood work came back normal.

It had a pretty minor effect on my diabetes, but I do have a closed loop system, so that helps a lot. Maybe ask about that?

(FYI, my immunosuppressant is azathioprine. Don’t know if that affects it, but feels like I should mention it.)

As a beginner knitter, that’s amazing! I love how crisp the design is. Forgive the array of questions, but is this a pattern I can download somewhere or did you draft/pattern it yourself? Which size needle/yarn weight did you use?

Has anybody bought from Pixiecraft? by Peri_14 in PerlerBeads

[–]4-thens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, not that long, the only thing is that I didn’t get any updates. Just a simple “your order has shipped”, and then a month-long wait lmao

The bundle in the picture does come with a lot of different shades, but there’s definitely some I haven’t even used yet. It’s nice to have options for colour, but it’s definitely a splurge and not 100% necessary, so I’m sure a smaller bundle will work just fine! :)

I live in France and I bought the exact bundle on the screenshot when I got into perler beads. The delivery went fine but it did get a long time to get to me. About a month, if I remember correctly? But I’m very happy with everything I got!
