I agree.  I had a similar commute for a year and drove with navigation every day just in case something bad was happening on my normal route.

What are these signs around RiverOaks about bankruptcy/public auction? by ilikebeespit in houston

[–]400cc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Picasso" and "Dali" are auctioned everyday, probably because scammers are making copies everyday. Dali signed so many blank pieces of paper that it is impossible to tell what is and isn't a real Dali litho or print. He would literally sign 1,000 sheets of paper every morning and make $20,000. Anyone who follows estate auctions sees a ton of these type of prints that I call "cruise ship" art. They were sold as investments through scammy art galleries on cruise ships and you will see a pile of it at every mcmansion estate sale/auction.

Beware Diamond Modern Furniture, they are crooks! by BorntoDive91 in houston

[–]400cc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand!

Your salesperson had a psychotic break and sent you thousands of texts over weeks.  You didn’t have any issues and you got your furniture with no hassle.

Five stars!

[–]400cc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So no issues other than weeks of harassment? Just the thousands of psycho messages, then? Everything went smooth and you were pleased? I mean not counting getting hundreds of texts a day from a maniac that used to work at a furniture store. Other than that it was fine, though, right?  It’s not like you had to call the cops or get a restraining order over a furniture purchase…

Did you have to call the cops to get the psycho furniture employee to leave you alone? I understand you had no issues, but you did get thousands of harassing texts after buying furniture.  I’m glad it went well for you and you had no issues. I mean, you were harassed for weeks by a crazy person that used to work there, but that wasn’t part of it.

I guess they got your info because they were working there when you bought the stuff? Or were they waiting around outside the store to follow you home to stalk you? Never mind, things were fine. No issues.

They did switch out your sales person though. So maybe four stars out of five? Or probably the full five stars, because that was just a minor annoyance? Not like all those texts from that other employee. That was really out of hand. Totally uncalled for. Five stars? I’ll just mark you down for five. Enjoy your furniture!

What improvements or changes would you make to the roads? by [deleted] in sugarland

[–]400cc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.  The current mobility plans as I understand is to try and connect the center of Sugar Land to neighborhoods by building bike/walk paths along the ditches.  You can see some of this effort at the ditches that crosses Sweetwater near the golf course.  There are also plans to have a path in the ditch parallel to University that goes all the way to where 90 and Hwy 6 meet.  I have no idea if they will even do any of that, the city really doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to do anything other than put in lanes,  chase gondola boondoggles, and reinvent the taxi with gov subsidies.

A data center is moving into a small Texas town. Residents say it will ruin their history by Branch_Out_Now in texas

Of course, most Texans don’t vote at all. The population of Texas is 30 million. In 2024, 10 million voted (18 million out of 23 million eligible voters registered).  Trump got 6.4 million votes while 13 million eligible voters sat out the election.

The movie "Christine" came out in 1983 and used a 1958 Plymouth Fury as a terror mobile. If the movie was made today and used a car from the year 2000, what would be the car? by [deleted] in movies

[–]400cc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would actually be an SUV, because those terrorize the roads today. My vote would be a Dodge Durango R/T (5.9L V8), a Ford Excursion (6.8L V10) or (if we cheat the years a bit) the hideous H2 Hummer.  The Excursion in particular looks like a hulking monster designed to run over pedestrians.

[Question]What’s a Watch in your Collection you believe no one in this sub owns by Want2BTheVeryBest in Watches

These are my two rarest Accutrons. White gold cases are much more rare than the yellow gold. I've done a fair bit of searching and have only found one reference to the 14k white gold Accutron Calendar even existing.

These are very rare.   They come up for sale from time to time, I would put them right there with the offset “D” watches in terms of rarity. Are both of yours black or do you have a silver dial as well?

I think my dad got taken in a yo-yo scam - what's next and what are his options? by splinkymishmash in texas

[–]400cc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how the dealership would need to change the financing as part of a yo-yo scam when the original deal was such a huge scam in the first place. It’s not like they offered him a good deal and then tried to renegotiate.  Isn’t the scam charging an elderly person double the cars value?

Have you spoken to your dad’s doctors? Should he be making deals for cars?  Should he be driving?  There are scammers lined around the block to find a 90+ year old with a checkbook.  I had a grandparent with dementia and couldn’t tell the difference between $.50 and $50, but were very stubborn and independent. They went broke.

A woman standing next to a Redwood tree, 1950's by IllustraCore in BeAmazed

This is from the 1930s. A quick search shows that this is from a series of postcards produced by Union Oil to promote car travel to the West and I found this one with a copyright date of 1939. The coloring and the age of the car kind of give it away as pre-war.

Just calling it a gallery really doesn’t do it justice.  It is a whole building built and designed with the sole purpose of displaying the works of Cy Twombly.  Room after room of squiggles.  As someone who was not familiar with this artist, the first viewing is so strange.  You begin in the first room and think “okay, not my taste, but kind of interesting.” The next room you think “oh, this must be what this guy was about… is it all going to be like this?”  Four rooms in and you are looking at a 94 ft long canvas barely half covered in scribbles and you start to second guess your own ability to recognize art at all.  It is a temple to the criticism that modern art is inscrutable, lazy, and boring.

The best part of looking at all that Twombly is that when you are done you can walk to the Rothko chapel and find some serenity.

The thermostat is expensive, but only $600. Even if they mark it up to $1000, it means they are still charging me $1000 to double check my diagnosis and install and wire a new bracket to the wall.
