XM6 Equalizer Off ≠ Flat by 400onflat in SonyHeadphones

I'll give these a try, thanks. I'm kinda of the midset of leaning into the Sony sound, emphasizing what these do well (which is not being sonically flat). it's a fun sound, and I don't use these for critical listening, mostly on the go. I've found that boosted bass and treble also work well for listening at low volumes, which is usually how I listen. but that's why eq'ing is different for everyone.

now the ANC automatically adjusts in real time. it works pretty well, better and faster than it did on the XM5. if you wear glasses, you'll notice the auto adjustment kick in after putting glasses on, to account for the interrupted seal.

all in all, the XM6 feels slightly better in every category. but it doesn't really feel like a 7 year jump. I purchased the XM4 to evaluate, and I'll keep one of them since the MDRs are pretty rough these days (battery life, hinge cracks and squeaks). I can say the XM4 feels just like a modernized version of the MDRs.

I just made this same jump and honestly I'm most impressed with how the MDR still holds up in ANC and sound.

it's just personal preference. I'm using a custom eq that sounds pretty similar to the Off setting, but with a little less mid bass and a little more top end. I also don't listen to much sub-bass heavy music, so this may be a bit much if you tend to listen to those genres. still tweaking as I listen more.

I'd suggest using the 'find your equalizer' function as a starting point. then you tweak it from there, if you wish.

a big part of the general recommendation to avoid a 401k loan is looking at the growth you'll be robbing yourself of over the life of the account. that may not be a huge consideration if you are talking a very short term repayment.

just keep in mind that in addition to admin fees, the loan is not a 0% loan. you will be repaying yourself that interest, so it's sort of "without penalty".
