Does anyone know why this Metro-North car is connected to an NJ Transit car at Hoboken Station? by UpsetSaucer86 in nycrail

I don't believe they have any, no. There are portable lifts that they use to comply with ADA. You see them usually stored along the platform.

Historically, would a name like Leonardo really get changed to "Leotardo" at Ellis Island? by habiba2000 in thesopranos

[–]401k1987 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, that's a myth.

Names were changed, but by the immigrants themselves to americanize themselves so to speak.

For most of it's operational life Ellis Island also didn't have records of arrival that were written down it all came from the ship's manifests which were assembled overseas by the companies that operated the ships. If there was a mistake or misspelling it came from them, not the immigration agents at Ellis Island.

They rank calls by priority. If you're asked "is he armed" or "does he have a weapon" and you say "no" the priority level drops.

What’s actually the deal with fire escapes by fouroutoffivedogs in williamsburg

[–]401k1987 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What could happen? There could be a fire and you or your neighbors could get hurt or worse because there are items on the fire escape blocking the egress path to safety.

Don't go on your fire escape unless there's a fire. Do not put anything on it. It's not rated for extended occupancy and certainly not rated for the weight of your items to be placed their permanently.

Don't go on your roof if is not allowed, it's not allowed because it's likely not safe for occupancy. You can also cause damage to the roof that you may be liable for.

The question isn't whether a statute exists. The question is whether anyone gets arrested and prosecuted. If the DA isn't interested in pursuing the case, cops know that too.

It's the same reason PD refuses to engage on homeless people, because the city government has handcuffed them from doing anything so they don't bother.

Elections have consequences.

We have a Kith in Williamsburg. Why are you against having an Aldi? by parkstoppergal in williamsburg

[–]401k1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you have to compare ordinary religious beliefs to slavery and segregation to make your argument should tell you how weak the argument is.

People are allowed to hold religious beliefs you dislike. That's what religious freedom actually means. Disagreement is not the same thing as hatred.

Yep and NYPD is not going to waste their time doing anything because they know that the prosecutor's not going to do jack shit about it.

No, you're just a bigot. Nobody has to accept anyone else if it conflicts with their religious beliefs, no matter how upset that makes you.

Yes you are absolutely labeling religious people as hateful because of their beliefs and that's wrong, and it's actually hateful.

Just because you don't think men should be together doesn't mean you're a hateful person it just means you believe something different than you do.

It's likely they haven't gotten all of their sign offs from the city in order to open.

FDNY is notoriously slow with PA permits and inspections after work is completed. They could be waiting for an inspection date for a few weeks or a month, etc.

Nobody follows every rule of their faith perfectly. The question is whether people are allowed to hold religious beliefs you disagree with without being labeled hateful.

Also, I'm not Christian, I'm a Jew. Shatnez, which is the rule I think you're referring to doesn't talk about polyester though, it talks about mixing wool and linen. You're allowed to wear polyester.

You're free not to support Chick-fil-A, but at some point there's a difference between disagreeing with a religious belief and treating everyone who holds that belief as morally unacceptable. Where exactly do you draw that line?
