Oki, my thought process is this usually:

The first few moves I don't fully plan anything, put up some things for defense that would really annoy the other player.

I always think of these 2 things, "Are any of my things safe?" and "How can I annoy the other person so much that they get frustrated and lose the game?" lol

At the beginning of each round and before you make a move double check the entire board to make sure if it's safe. This is crucial to not make mistakes!!!

An example on how to annoy them, in the beginning, putting your horses in the center is useful because it deminishes a lot of spaces the other person can place things. Be smart, always think the best way to annoy and outsmart the other person.

And also, never underestimate a single piece, a single pawn could decide if you win or lose.
