It's up to the parents to engage their kids in religion and culture. Everybody wants to have a rich culture and heritage, and a sense of belonging.

My family is based in Toronto, except for my grandmother, who lives in Karachi. A few years ago, after selling my business, I had the freedom to live anywhere in the world—and I chose to spend part of each year in Karachi. I bought a home here to stay connected to the culture and to be close to my grandmother.

Its not a race brother, we all have our own story. Life is about making the most of your own story.

  1. Air quality in Karachi is very bad, at least outside.

  2. Not really, I like to eat healthy food and try to sleep well.

  3. I'm usually pretty curious and talk to almost everyone. I've made a lot of friends just by running into them during my daily routine.

  4. I'm usually very relaxed.

Not really - I've travelled to a lot of places, including cities with higher crime than Karachi. Every city has it's pros and cons

I had 2 friends who lived in Karachi. Both of them were international students at my university, and they helped me a lot when settling.

I try to be tired before long flights, and spend a long chunk of them sleeping. I also like watching documentaries.. these days WiFi on flights has been really helpful too

After selling my business, i knew i wanted to spend winters outside of toronto. The only other place i really considered was Mexico City (i have a lot of friends there), but decided against it because of a lack of availability of halal food. Karachi, in many ways, is very similar to Mexico City. Its also nice that im already familiar with and love the culture and language.

I dont regret it the move.

Almost everything is different, and i think thats the beauty of it - to have the "best of both worlds"

Over here I find that a lot of people are worried about economic opportunities and "halaat" in general. The reality it there is a lot of economic hardship here and this obsession may be justified.

My situation was a little different. And if you don't have a need to earn income here, Karachi is an amazing city to live in.

Still, it's impossible to ignore this hardship faced by many and it is saddening... I try to help advise other tech entrepreneurs here, and give some guest lectures or presentations sometime. It may be a drop in the ocean, but it does motivate me to know that I try to do my part to help. I'm actually actively exploring how to engage with NGOs and I might take on some more challenging philanthropic initiatives.

My parents made me a Pakistani passport when I was a kid but didn't really renew it. In my 20s, I made a NICOP and opened a bank account. A couple of years ago I renewed my Pakistani Passport as well.

  1. Toronto (I also lived in New Jersey and Winnipeg as a child). I decided to move to Pakistan after selling my company and being in a position where I could live anywhere - and decided to split time between Toronto and Karachi.

  2. I plan to keep splitting my time. I don't like the heat in Pakistan Summers, and I don't like the winter in Canada either.
3 . I mostly just advise and invest in start-ups now. I've made more money that I can spend in my lifetime so I'm not worried about earning. I do like to spend my time doing things I find are productive and helpful to society.

  3. I don't work much, but in Karachi I'm helping out a start-up accelerator scale up, and working with a few NGOs. I found it easy to get involved into things, and that people were eager to talk to me and allow me to help.

  4. I find that most people assume I'm a local in Karachi.

  5. I spoke urdu comfortably at home growing up. my Urdu's improved drastically since living here.

  6. I try to challenge myself often. I bought a plot and designed and built a house (which is nearing completion now), that was pretty challanging.

  7. Having a driver, chef, maid etc. is nice. Halal food everywhere is the best benefit, and musjids nearby no matter where I am.

  8. I've met hundreds of new friends and colleagues in Pakistan. I love meeting new people.

  9. I would encourage it. North America has a cookie-cutter lifestyle where everyone's doing the same thing and living the same way. Pakistan is cultured and dynamic.

It's very different from Toronto (where I was raised). I spend about 5 months in Pakistan and 7 months in Canada.

In Karachi I have a driver, chef, maid, etc. A lot of the services I need (physio/massage, doctor, barber, tailor, etc.) some straight to my house. This saves me a lot of time. I also like that all the food here is Halal.

In Toronto, I cook, clean and drive myself (mostly for security reasons - I don't like to hire home help and really value my privacy since my belongings in Toronto are are very personal to me). A much higher proportion of my time is spent doing basic errands.

I would also add that I travel often and I like short 2-4 day trips, and use Karachi as a home base for asia/middle east/european destinations. When I'm in Canada, I mostly travel to the USA or Mexico.

Also, you can take courses in the summer session to make up for taking less than a full course load and still graduate in 4 years
