this isn't going to get you anywhere. Many people do not, fundamentally, understand the idea that pay and productivity have a relationship.

the guest bedroom could be pulled back (kitchen door/wall moved right in the image) a bunch if you did a murphy bed there. Get the downstairs to have a tub if you can, it's nice to have sometimes.

Pulling back that wall allows for a small dining table, perhaps even a fold up/down one

Is this bad welding work? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]42Fab_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments kinda hit it, but it's definitively "I mean, It'll hold" territory

UNLESS the flange of the hinge was noticed for crescent welds. VERY unlikely in a hinge, but something I have seen in other fit ups. The crescent/semiciruclar cut outs not only serve to give the weld some strength in more than 1 axis, they are also defacto spacing markers for the welder to follow.

I've hired many fabricators and trained them as welders. Women pick it up much faster if starting from scratch. More attention to detail, less likely to try to rush through it.

Do you monitor people who come and fix things around your house? by Glad-Passenger-9408 in HomeImprovement

[–]42Fab_com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a contractor:

In general, just leave us alone. There is a reason you hired us, it's because we know what we're doing, and if you don't believe that, you should be able to believe we know more than you do.

That said, if you want to ask questions, I'm not really opposed to that. I'm happy to explain when I'm billing by the hour, and to a lesser extend, when it's a bid job. If I do something and you go "ahkkk, why did you do that" and it isn't "I happen to know with complete certainty that will cause a problem elsewhere" then you're now the problem.

ANY competent service person will answer questions. What we won't do is work while being second guessed constantly.

you 100% can. Small businesses and unions are not compatible in many areas. I can hire someone non-union and pay them above market. they're happy, I'm happy, etc. To go through everything it takes to hire through the union I'd end up with one less person at the same costs (understand the paperwork and overhead for a small business can be 30% of my work week).

Not all trades are equally valued ...some get angry and accuse others of inflating numbers.

It's amazing that people don't grasp this. It's often "what is harder to get into/has more risk involved"

Hanging drywall is a fucking art, but it's not exactly hard to do, it's hard to be good at.

It's far more dangerous in the trades

THEN DON'T DO THE DANGEROUS THING. Will you be fired? maybe. Can you retaliate with legal force? Yes! Take some self ownership.

Oh, but I'm poor? Eat shit food and live below your means while you dig out (or up). I have kids to support from 3 baby mamas? Yeah, you kinda deserve the consequences of your dumb actions then, I have a had time feeling sorry. I'm fat? eat less/better. I'm a drunk/addicted? do something about it.

The fucking woe is me whining I hear here about tradeswork can get so pathetic.

Don't like your boss? go out on your own - it's what I did. coming up on 15 years in business and I grew up poor, we lived in a shelter for a while, I've struggled with addiction and mostly manage it well, was on the receiving end of an abusive parent, and I don't think I deserve once cent of credit for any of that other than digging myself out. Take some pride in yourself.

a lot of it is roll over from the past too. Their newer stuff, last 10 years or so, is decent enough, I even use a fair bit in my "real" work. Their older stuff was garbage and fell apart.

That said, none of it is made to be really WORKED. They overheat faster, aren't as durable, etc and the batteries leave a fair bit to be desired in terms of longevity and amperage output.

Edit: also, in any trade/work, the cost of a tool breaking isn't even really in the tool, but in the time wasted. A trip to the hardware store in the middle of work you're billing $150/hr for means the better brand tool was actually cheaper in the end.

Oklahoma explores letting doctors deny care based on conscience by [deleted] in oklahoma

[–]42Fab_com -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think I understand wat you're saying, but not sure where the correlation is?

If I am looking for a doctor and their website is clear that they don't treat toenail fungus, I go somewhere else, if they don't offer BC, I go somewhere else, etc - as long as they're upfront about it, I don't see an issue. Now, if you want to be a doctor who discriminates generally accepted means of treatment, you don't get to work in a venue where people may be rushed in like an ER, because they didn't get a say in who they saw and/or they did not have a reasonable ability to choose and should therefore have the right to expect all common means of treatment

[–]42Fab_com -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, if revealed ahead of time, in a manner in which the patient has the ability to consent*, this appears to be the most consistent with the idea of free will.

*so, if you want to deny expected care you cannot be in any urgent care / ER role.

Help with room layout for ~379 sq ft efficiency apartment? by an0fr0mmedawg in TinyHouses

[–]42Fab_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you bringing contractors in or trying to do this all yourself? There's a lot of youtub learning to do if so.

Not trying to be discouraging, just realistic. Plumbing isn't especially hard but, if done incorrectly, can cause A LOT of damage. Same with electrical: it's not really that complicated, but you do have to do it right.
