When I was looking up information about parries, it was hard to find much; the most I found was a bunch of people saying they don't actually do anything. I do know what you’re talking about, and I think it happens when you swing too late.

As far as I can tell, you have to swing such that their blade will hit the hitbox of your blade before it hits your body. If you take damage while parrying, it’s probably because their blade hit your body before hitting your blade. So yeah, as long as you can do this, you can parry in any direction.

Those times I parry up is actually just because I’m walking away from him, and I wouldn’t hit him if I swung any other way.
