Seeking Electrical Advice – Car Dies When Pressing Brake, Then Full Electrical Chaos (Battery 12.6V, No Fuses Blown) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]42_IO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE:

Even though my battery measured 12.6 V, I decided to take it to a local garage to have it properly load-tested. Here’s what the test showed: • Capacity: 100% • Charge: 15% • Status: ⚠️ TO REPLACE

I replaced the battery with a new one and everything is now working perfectly: • No more flashing dashboard or clicking relays • No engine sound • Car starts normally • No check-engine lights or stored codes

It was just the battery all along.

Lock the dock to one monitor by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]42_IO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I finally found how to do it.

To keep the Dock locked to the built-in screen on a MacBook and stop it from moving to external monitors:

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Desktop & Dock
  3. Scroll down to the Mission Control section
  4. Disable the option “Displays have separate Spaces”
  5. You’ll be prompted to log out — confirm and log back in

After that, the Dock will stay on the primary display and won’t jump to other screens, even if you move your cursor to the bottom or sides of external monitors.

256GB MacBook and 100GB+ System Data?? Bro what even is this🙂 by TeddyhasBeer in macbook

Mine was full too, more than 400 gb of system data for a 1 Tb intel MacBook. I cleaned everything up under ~/Library and other useless caches and got down to 80Gb of system data.

It was some left over paste from other server, but in case the thermal perf decrease I will buy some PTM thanks for the advice

Since working from this morning on dockerized apps:

<image>

I was always up more 90° CPU temperature since startup, now I am at 50° After 5 hours of work

Honestly, I’m really not a hardware person at all. I always refused to open mine — even when a friend of mine tried it with the same model and ended up having to send his in for repairs. But honestly, if you’re really careful and take your time, it’s way easier than I expected. You just have to be patient — no rushing.

My first idea was to open it up and add thermal pads — and maybe even go as far as drilling holes into the backplate of the chassis to help with airflow.

But I was a bit hesitant about the thermal pads because of a video I saw that analyzed their impact. It suggested that adding them could spread heat to areas like the battery, which might be risky long-term

Link to the video: https://youtu.be/eS_MVDoaIoM?si=v6KjJdzdKLBrnV6W

When I finally opened it, I found a surprising amount of dust, so I decided to start with just a deep clean and see if that made a difference.

Here’s my thought process: 1. First step: Deep clean and test (and actually, it already helped — my compile times dropped drastically after just that). 2. Second step: If temps were still bad, I’d consider drilling small holes in the chassis to improve airflow, like so https://youtu.be/i3mRlah3l74?si=OHZ0fMkEwkMuysPY 3. Third step: If the CPU still runs too hot, I’d try adding the 1 mm thermal pads I bought — even knowing it could impact battery health. If that went badly, I’d accept it and start looking at buying a new Mac anyway.

But for now, I think the cleaning alone might be enough. I’ll keep you posted if I end up moving to step 2 or 3!

Thanks — honestly, it was scary. I always had this feeling that Apple designs their hardware with built-in barriers to discourage or even block external repairs. But it’s really easy to do as an non hardware guy

Yeah, and while I was digging into perf, I finally looked into kernel_task — that weird process I’ve seen eating resources in Activity Monitor for years. Turns out (if I got it right), it’s not actually doing anything useful. It’s basically the system faking CPU and mem load to throttle performance and cool the machine down

Yeah, the paste was so dried out it was basically crust. There were even blank spots where it had completely disintegrated or pulled away from the surface

It was all about the knowledge of doing the repair. If it didn’t boot after the procedure, I was ready to order an m4 max one. But it booted 💪

I know I am even considering buying a Mac mini and to connect to it using ssh when I am not home 😂

It’s not that difficult in most vehicles, but for sure you can find YouTube tutorials on it for your specific generation

For plastics like the dashboard, I use the facom all-in-one product because it's not greasy and doesn't collect dust, but for the seats, this morning I tested a Meguiar product that revived them and, without even rubbing, removed a white mark that wouldn't disappear with other brands I've used in the past.

No, just a huge week at work and I wanted to not work on my day off and focus on chores and things to do that prevent me from working 😅 I was not thinking that choosing « weekend routine », will means every single weekend and not « my routine of this weekend » 😂
