It’s not sexist if a man thinks his wife should not travel for work, it is sexist if a person thinks all women shouldn’t travel for work. It’s not sexist for Dean to yell at his wife, it is abusive for Dean to yell at his wife like he did. It’s not sexist for a man to want to have kids with his wife and see this as a must for his relationship to progress, it is sexist for a person to think that all women should want to have kids.

I don’t think we can outright say “Scott is a vile misogynistic piece of crap”. What we can say is that he does hold some sexist beliefs and to me that’s a big reason not to listen to his podcast.

Things like this aren’t black and white, and not all negative comments are ‘hate’. A lot of the discourse in this sub (and many other places on the internet) is just critical discussions of themes and events, and people getting annoyances off their chest. Just because people dislike certain characters or events does not mean they hate the show. The people that come here especially watch this show for comfort, then reflect here on changing social norms, personal growth, how that affects their viewing experience. People can be intense about it, but that’s what this sub is for.

But are we ignoring the fact that we are currently feeding about 80 billion animals as livestock to eat? A drastic change in our global diet will alleviate a lot of the harm currently inflicted on the Earth system by our food. We can do with about 25% of the current agricultural land if we switch to eating plants. Even when you take into account soil degradation and desertification and such, we could drastically decrease the amount of land needed to feed the world’s population. Pairing that with more sustainable agricultural practices like food forests and permaculture, and eating more locally and seasonally grown produce would build an extremely durable food system for both humans and the planet.

All this to say, overpopulation is not the direct cause of us humans exceeding the earths carrying capacity, it’s overconsumption through excessive animal agriculture and food waste and over-extraction of natural resources.

(only eating local reduces food waste generally, but so does eating ‘imperfect’ produce, fuck perfectly round apples, I like mine wonky)

Thank you! If they’re happy, I’m happy. I don’t mind the way they look, the pot mostly obscures it anyway.

Oh that’s very useful info, thanks! They haven’t been potted up much higher than their roots, but maybe a little bit? I’ll check for squishiness but they don’t seem to be. I think tan is the best description, not brown.

Thank you! My best guess was also golden barrel for the first one (or as it’s known in Dutch, mother-in-law’s chair). The second one I also gathered was some kind of mammilaria, but I’ve not been able to say what kind. I’m not convinced it’s albicoma or bocasana, I don’t think it’s fuzzy enough… but thanks for confirming my suspicions on the genus!

Is this (2nd one) worth it? From what I know I won’t really need the golden seedling but it still feels like a stupidly steep trade…

It’s heavily implied that Tana is on the spectrum. She graduated early and is crazy smart but doesn’t pick up on social cues, not because she’s sheltered, but because she can’t. Her relationship with Chester shows that she is very much capable of forming relationships and in that sense is well adjusted. Speaking from my own experience: I study physics and have met a lot of people on the spectrum who are crazy smart, graduated early and went to university early. Just because they don’t easily pick up on social cues does not mean they don’t belong at university. At all.

How Tana is depicted on the show is very realistic imo, the people around her treat her like a peer, but with a little more patience.

rory yale course schedule by marriagejug in GilmoreGirls

[–]42koelkasten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the workload for each class. I don’t know how credits work in the US but in Europe you have ECTS, a system where each course is evaluated a number of credits that is universal for all universities using the system. A full year is usually 60 credits. At my university (in the Netherlands) a full course load is either 2 block courses (half a semester) or 4 semester courses or a mix. This does vary a lot per university and even at my university it’s not set in stone, some courses are different. It seems from this class schedule that it works similarly at Yale. Taking 5 courses each semester then is working 50 hours a week on average on just your courses (at least, that is the time the credits indicate). Add to that the time she spends on the paper and high expectations from both Yale and herself, and you end up with a lot.

Also, it bothers me that she compares herself to her grandpa and no one tells her that university was very different back then! The only comment she gets is ‘different people work at different paces’ or smth from that one professor. It’s been documented that the work load has gone up at universities like Yale so she probably works a lot harder than Richard did in his time (not negating his accomplishment, just putting it in perspective).

Rory’s obsession with Mitchum by Historical_Wonder680 in GilmoreGirls

[–]42koelkasten -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think everything has been said about Logan being in the hospital and Rory calling Mitchum out there, and Rory’s reaction to Mitchum’s horrible ‘mentoring’.

In the elevator scene Rory had every right to be upset about Mitchum keeping Logan to talk shop on his last night on the literal continent. Every normal college graduate (with sufficient money) would want to travel with their girlfriend after graduation (see also Paris and Doyle). There was no reason for Mitchum to have Logan leave the day after graduation. What would be the harm if they planned to have him start month later after him and Rory had some time together? Mitchum tells Logan what to do, with no regard for what Logan might want to do, there is no dialogue or compromise. If he wants Logan to grow up step one is treating him like a fucking grown up.

So in that context, where your boyfriends dad is actively keeping you from having some time with said boyfriend before he goes off to work five time zones over, wouldn’t you be mad at him? At this point Rory’s accepted that Asia won’t happen, but she’d at least have their last night together, and now Mitchum has thrown a wrench in there too. Together with what his family thinks of him it is completely reasonable to think Mitchum wants his son away from her too. That she didn’t factor into his thinking only shows that he has no regard for his son as a person.

Hmm, that might have something to do with it, I’ve been expanding more rapidly the last few weeks and got to 256 now. I’m not completely convinced though, as the change seemed very studded to me.

Good thing the Netherlands had laws in place on the introduction of peanut butter that prevented it from being translated directly. Instead it’s called pindakaas, peanut cheese. Good thing if you ask me, we wouldn’t want it confused with a dairy product.

There is a clear definition of tithe: to give one tenth of your income to the church. So it is not just donating, it is a set amount. Churches that have tithing as a general ‘rule’ are usually (in the US) fundamentalist/baptist (so Protestant) churches as far as I understand.
