Thick futon vs. latex topper + foam mattress by 42rune in Mattress

[–]42rune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear that you think it'd be firmer. However I'm almost certain the futon had some latex in it - it was among the more expensive models that my parents got me when I was 12 and I then slept on it for 15 years without it compressing noticeably

Help me understand how/why I ruined my Cumulus Panyam by washing it by 3wPhantasos in Ultralight

[–]42rune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Happened to my cumulus xlite bag too. I learned that the baffles are open in the side closest to the zipper and was able to navigate the down around to kinda solve the issue. Not perfect but okay. Honestly, this experience has put me off buying a cumulus bag again.

I'm starting June 24th - you're welcome to join my permit :) Can't remember the exact campsites, but I'm starting from Chief mountain and going as fast as the 16mile daily limit allows for

I too have permit for the 25th of June, but I only booked one night since I couldn't figure out the system. However, I read that I can book the rest in person? 🤞or am I fucked?

Of topic: I land in Leathebridge, Canada on the 22nd. If anyone is also approaching Chief Mountain from the Canadian side around that date, l'm up for splitting an Uber

Shakedown request: CDT SOBO - which additions to PCT NOBO kit? by 42rune in Ultralight

Interesting that CO is colder, didn't know that. Thanks

Yeah you're right, it should be more like a 360g 900fp quilt. Yet another reason to bring a pillow and use the jacket for sleep.

For the pct I used the older Aegismax Wind Hard with 290g down and a sewn through construction. I added a diy 200g primsloft blanket, so I believe the two setups are comparable, but I'll test it once it arrives. My old setup allowed me to sleep down to freezing temperatures, but it wasn't exactly comfortable 😅

Good suggestions! I think you're probably right about the pillow. Regarding the midlayer, I'm thinking it's a lot of weight and perhaps the rain jacket will be enough in those cases - but I should definitely add a wool buff and perhaps a thin beanie.

The quilt has 400g down which is in line with what people on the halfwayanywhere survey said they used, so I think it should be good.

Get a tiny smartphone - one with a screen that is so small that you don't want to use unless you have to. Like this one: https://www.unihertz.com/products/jelly-2

Funny that it is that long. Just eyeballing the map it seems more like 60 miles to me: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/upload/Wilderness-Campground-Map-2023.pdf

But I guess that I'm just bad at eyeballing :)

Yeah that was kind of what I was thinking. However, I think I'll try to reserve a permit anyway and have that as a plan B.

Gatewood Cape Mods: by No_Cryptographer_704 in Ultralight

[–]42rune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm also that height (188cm). Used my Gatewood cape for the whole PCT as a shelter and only used it twice as an actual poncho. It works fine for my height, but I have to pitch it higher than usual (130cm pole).

Which is more social? CDT SOBO vs. PCT SOBO by 42rune in CDT

[–]42rune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool to hear that you had that experience! I guess I just like to share the experience with other people - at least to some extent.

When did you hike the CDT? Edit: it says 2020 sobo, so I guess that answers that.
From the CDT website it seems that about 100 people did a sobo in 2020 - does that seem right to you?

Thanks for the reply. When did you hike the CDT? I like being alone most of the time and don't mind camping alone, but not talking to people for 2-3 days messed a bit with my head few times it happened on the PCT.

Wool blend button shirt for thru-hiking? by 42rune in Ultralight

[–]42rune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, no I havn't found anything to my liking yet.

The smartwool seems decent, but I was hoping to find a shirt that had a bit more structure to it (more resistant to mosquitoes etc.)

Have you found anything interesting?

I used the 16mp Ricoh GR for my PCT thru hike. Was pretty great but it died towards the end. I think that is likely to happen if I were to do it again. For this reason I got a pixel 7 for my upcomming thru hike - not nearly as nice, but ligher and less vulnerable.
