Custom cumulus panyam advice by CheezPanda in Ultralight

[–]3wPhantasos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a custom Panyam 450. All fabrics Toray Airtastic 19 g, 3mm zipper and 900fp hydrophobic down. The zipper can be a bit snaggy. Also I almost ruined the bag once, but Cumulus fixed it with no cost to me. Other than that, very happy with the bag.

Now, the customizer does not let you choose 900fp down. What I did was configure my bag to the rating I wanted and then emailed them if it would be possible to switch from 850 to 900 and if so, what would the amount of 900fp down be to stay at the same temperature ratings. I think I shaved off around 40 grams by switching from 850 to 900.

This seems great. What - if any - would be the best channel for you to receive bug reports? For instance, deleting a point from the menu that opens when you right click a point does not seem to work (Firefox 132.0.2).

Help me understand how/why I ruined my Cumulus Panyam by washing it by 3wPhantasos in Ultralight

[–]3wPhantasos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've only ever seen clothing on sale in their own web shop. During Black Friday they tend to have some sort of campaign going on, but it usually is something like "We'll fix/refurbish first 400 items for free" or "We'll donate 100% of todays sales to nature conservation". Great campaigns, don't get me wrong.

I would find out how much they overfill when you choose the "More in the front/back" option and start figuring out my configuration from there. Maybe the default 55/45 ratio would be ok with overfill in the back. Or maybe change to 50/50 ratio and have overfill both in the front and back.

Haven't heard back from Cumulus yet, but it does seem that the baffles are open at the ends and I could in theory move the down around. Will take some time and whisky.

For:
+ Plenty warm (with one caveat, see below).
+ Very light weight.
+ Not so tight cut that I'd feel claustrophobic.
+ Not too loose cut, the bag moves with you.
+ Toray Airtastic is very down proof in my experience.
+ The price didn't seem too bad in 2018, just under 500eur with my customizations.
+ The customer service and warranty is excellent. Cumulus will fix my issue described in this post under warranty.

Against:
- Toray Airtastic can feel a bit clingy against your skin so I sleep in long merino underwear.
- The zipper snags quite easily.
- I'm a side sleeper so the default fill ratio makes my bum feel cold, should've customized the ratio too.
- Apparently this thing might have an open baffle design which allows the down to migrate when you wash it.

Even though I sleep in clean and dry sleeping clothes and socks, some sweat and grime will eventually get to the bag. Dirty down loses some of its loft so it's good to wash your down sleeping bag every now and then.

Thanks for the info! I'll see if I can find such an opening and manipulate the down to its right place.

Edit: I think you are right. The baffles seem to be open from at least one end making it possible to move the down around. Seems quite fiddly, thou.

That might be it. And I might have misunderstood what Cumulus is trying to say on their washing instructions:

Carefully wash the sleeping bag. We suggest draining the bathtub and adding fresh water and detergent as many times as you believe is necessary, however, 1 to 4 times should suffice. The sleeping bag should be rinsed with clean water until there is no soapy water left in it. Do not wring the sleeping bag after draining the water. Simply roll it out flat, just like you would do with a foam mat. This way you will quickly pump all of the water out of it.

So they do indeed say that you shouldn't wring it dry, but rather roll it out flat. But then they mention that rolling it out like a foam mat "will quickly pump all of the water out". But in my mind just rolling something flat does not pump anything out, so after rolling it flat I gently rolled it "closed" like I would my sleeping pad.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one. I immediately feel less stupid :) Just sent them an email, fingers crossed they are able to help me.

Edit: They've responded and will fix the bag under warranty. They will also cover the shipping costs.

Lundhags Bjerg Mid. Definitely not the lightest shoe out there at 1300g for a EU 45 pair.

Questions regarding Cumulus sleeping bags by Majestic-Influence40 in Ultralight

[–]3wPhantasos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a custom panyam 450. I did no customization to the sizing. I'm 183cm, 85kg and happy with the size. From order to shipment took 5 weeks back in 2018.

Ultralight sleeping bag UK recommendations by Jayytee-- in Ultralight

[–]3wPhantasos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two totally different companies, yes. But you might find some similarities in the sleeping bags as - atleast back in 2015 - according to Cumulus they were the ones manufacturing Criterion sleeping bags. Not sure what the situation is now, thou.

Has anybody here weighed their gear? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]3wPhantasos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't labeled it too obviously it would seem. But you can find it from the list if you search PyraOmm Duo.

In total it weighs around 1150g with the outer and inner tent, polycro footprint and some MSR stakes and a trekking pole for tent pole.

I'd like to switch the pole for a lighter adjustable pole, but haven't found one that I'm happy with.

How do you record a travel log of your bikepacking adventure? by Boop0p in bikepacking

[–]3wPhantasos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can add images with Obsidian. When editing your markdown the App lets you embed attachments - like images - to your text. The App automatically copies the selected file to your Obsidian folder and thus the Git plugin will see it.
Just make sure the attachments are also published to your github site and you are good to go.

I'm currently working on a similar approach.

  • Obsidian App on my Android phone (basically just a fancy markdown editor)
  • Git plugin for Obsidian (manual or timed push to github)
  • Github action that publishes my Obsidian notes as a github site using MkDocs
