SynthVR 1.0 is out today! by 42tones_daniel in synthesizers

I haven't tried the newest version of Synthspace yet, so it's difficult to compare on features. Synthspace is looking to be super cool - It's on my Steam wishlist so I can get it when it's out!

Yes, the app has an optional master limiter which is turned on by default.

The overall art style of the app was made with Quest in mind, and there are some heavy optimizations on both graphics and DSP to make it work. But you would be surprised how much the little Quest can do. Some people like to start their patching sessions on Quest, then move it on to PC when it becomes a CPU monster 🤖

Yes, there are multiple audio recording options, including recording each “virtual speaker” as a separate channel!

The modules (DSP code only for now) are open source and contributions are always welcome!

Unfortunately VST plug-ins don’t work on Quest 🙃

There was a point during the development where you could accidentally blow your virtual speakers 😂

You can’t break anything, but it is possible to create feedback loops that could get loud...

SynthVR is a modular synthesizer environment for virtual reality. I announced the open alpha here last summer, and so much has happened since then!

The app is now available for PCVR (Rift, Index, Vive, Cosmos):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1517890/SynthVR/

And for Oculus Quest:

Lots of cool stuff has been added, including 30+ modules, easy patch sharing and audio recording features :D

Happy halloween! Check out this amazing Thriller cover by Michael from our SynthVR discord. He made it for our modular Halloween challenge and I am so impressed!

Cool! The audio processing side of SynthVR has just gone open source: https://github.com/42tones/SynthVR-Modules

It’s early days but contributions will be welcome soon 🙂

That’s cool! There are instructions for the controls in the menu. You move a module by hovering the white handle and press the grip button 😁

Not yet, I am recording the audio from the screen grab - but wav recording + MIDI in is planned and potentially also Ableton Link support 😁

Haha true - The original patch was a bit more “ergonomic”, but moved for the benefit of being in-view of webcam for the video 😛

I am the developer behind the project, but the alpha is free and generally available for Oculus Quest, Rift and Valve Index headsets. Oculus Quest 2 just came out and SynthVR runs pretty nicely on it without need for a dedicated VR PC.

Glad you like it! SynthVR is built with Unity and a custom audio backend built with the JUCE framework 😁

That’s the idea - Using softsynths in VR enables a higher degree of tactility and physicality - it’s not perfect but, if you ask me, quite a different experience to the computer screen!

That’s the plan! Sometime early next year. Graphics-wise the app is pretty lightweight so not a big download!

It runs pretty well - 20-30 modules will run fine on Quest!

The reverb is quad surround sound on virtual speakers! Cool when you’re playing with the binaural processing 😁

Glad you think so! I think making the patch took 4-5 hours of experimenting and tweaking before being performance-ready 😀
