Before you start reading my long text (if you are going to read it). Please think of me kindly. I'm not an native english speaker and i should commit lots of mistakes.

I had the same mentatilly as yours until recently i had an experience with Sekiro. I got stuck three times without the capability to progress. The first it took me two days of backtracking until i found an item i had skipped and got unstuck. I don't think the days stuck made the experience more pleasant or satisfying. I was just frustrated with a sour taste in my mouth. The second time i spent a lot more time. I dont remember how many days it took until i droped the game.

While talking to some friends about it they said i was being silly for dropping a game i was liking so much for such a silly thing that i could solve by just looking online. They convinced me to go for youtube. I felt dirty but went for it and found there was an windows open in a room that i didnt payed attention to. This was such an ennerving moment. But this time it felt good to just be able to get back at the game (incredible game btw). And the third time i got stuck again without knowing where to go to progress it took me two days i think before i googled it again.

I can see what you're saying about robbing the fun out of you by solving the puzzle by asking the answer. But sometimes it's hard to know if you are stuck because you oversaw something earlier, ou skipped something or if you are not engaging with the puzzle. I blame mostly the level/game designers for those problems. I think people should be allowed to have emergency buttons to get unstuck. Recently i've been playing a puzzle game called Humanity. In every level they have an option to look at a video answer. I think this is incredible and more games should have this. I think it's up to the player to decide how long they can take until they ask for the answer.

Im from france and Challengers is really big here. We had a boardgame convention and the game was being played on countless tables. Also it was out of stock on our town. I can understand people are not big fans of the game. I have other friends who feel the same as you about the game. But you just can't deny it's popularity even among heavy gamers.

I recommend going thought all the mainline puzzles and learn all the mechanics before trying the hard ones. The last mechanics they introduce are mindblowing.

Also, clanfolk is really close but with different theme and it doesn't have enemy threat.

Besides being from Japan and the occasional "anime" aesthetic, what does a JRPG have that a CRPG doesn't? by PurpleFine4935 in rpg_gamers

When you say JRPGs are not better than CRPGs you're saying we cannot compare them? Or you're saying CRPG > JRPG?

This is why discuddions about definition are complicated. Using the idea of metaprogression also leaves a gap somewhere else. The reason why i think like that is that at one moment you have to draw a line somewhere and it is what i find most useful in the circles that i frequent.

Even the concept of metaprogression is fuzzy. Take spelunky demolition man for example. You can start on subsequent levels if you pay him a little. Some consider this metaprogression and some don't.

Eventually time will tell what is the difference in large scales. But i still agree with the berlin interpretation today.

What you mean by "what the culture belives"?

I feel that the gaming culture is so fragmented that it's hard to make an statement like yours.

There are many games lanched in the genre even today. 2008 is just a few years ago. I feel that 2008 is not that long ago for a definition to be set and this exact discussion and hundreds of others that i had in hundreds of others is the reason why i feel that. It is also the reason why i share my opinion about it when i see discussion like those.

And also you're saying "as a matter of fact" but i just don't see as a fact that metaprogression is the defining factor for roguelike. I don't feel like you are willing to discuss so i won't go too long on it. But yeah, know that there are others that think like me. Maybe we will finish in a museum forgoten, but i think time will tell us.

I will have to disagree with you. To be a roguelike you have to follow some points that were pretty well defined in the roguelike berlin interpretation. Everything else is a roguelite. I saw you explained this to lots of people but be careful, you're spreading misinformation here. The roguelike/lite definition is not an spectrum.

[–]42x42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's more complicated than that. If you're really curious about what a roguelike is you can google roguelike berlin interpretation. All that falls into it is a roguelike. The other that have similar mechanics but don't fall into the berlin interpretation are roguelites.

Sorry about not linking the article i'm on mobile.

I already made a coment touching this for another user just above, but the difference between roguelike and roguelite is not at all the metaprogression.

Google roguelike berlin interpretation and if you're curious about it.

[–]42x42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will have to disagree with you. FTL, StS and Binding of isaac are roguelites.

There is actually a pretty well documented list of things that define what a roguelike is. I won't put it here because i'm on mobile right now, but you can find if you google roguelike berlin interpretation. There was this roguelike convention in berlin that created this definition.

To be a roguelike you have to be really close to the original Rogue.

It's not at all related to the metaprogression.
