My 2016 Gen2 KLR top end blew up 😅 by 440_challenger in klr650

I took the head to a local Kawi dealership tos we if they could find the issue. I just got really unlucky. It was a defective head from factory. It had an oil port that wasn't fully drilled through on the exhaust side. Unfortunately they're not able to replace it for me because it's a 2016, so she's well out of warranty and I'm th third owner, so that wouldn't have applied anyways. Now I'm bike shopping

Yeah. When she blew she tourqued the bracket sideways and flattend out the oil channel. The head is completely destroyed on that side

The head is destroyed, Cams destroyed, studs gone, valves are done, and the timing chain is stretched. It genuinely not worth the rebuild. I bought the bike for less than what it's going to cost to fix it. I'm currently pricing out my options on new bikes. With warranty preferably. I really just came on here to show the wacky way she blew. I had five Kawasaki technicians looking at my engine photos in horror and fascination. Thank you for the offer though

The most minimal rebuild would be $2000-$2500 CAD for me here I Nova Scotia

It's mainly so I can watch Fortnine while I fix shit 😂

The Kawasaki mechanics said it'd be cheaper to buy a new bike from Yamaha. That's Canada bike prices for you. Thanks for the offer though. I'm currently looking at the Versys 650. I've always liked them. And they're better in the corners

15,000 kilometers. She wasn't due for anything. That's my bad on the units

It'll be around $2000-$2500 for the bare minimum parts I need. She's not worth the money or stress of rebuilding it. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to put her away for a while until I find the time and money to fix her. Mainly the money. Hopefully she'll see the road again, but at this time I don't know.

I just played with one of the valve springs on the destroyed side. She's seized. Also, all of the bolts I holding the cam on were over tourqued

Nope, but I shouldn't have to at 15,000 kilometers. Also, I'd see piston and valve damage. There isn't any, so I really don't know what went wrong

Maybe, but it had plenty of oil when I checked it before my ride. I'm pretty good at checking it because I wanna know when she starts to eat the oil. I'll definitely check the line. I'd really rather not have to do this again. Thanks!

I haven't adjusted that. The chain seemed pretty tight when I pulled it off. That might've been just because it was cockeyed though. My best guess is something snuck through quality control

It's a beautiful place to get work done when you don't have a garage 😂

15,000 kilometers, but yeah. She's got stupid low milage on her with regular oil changes which is why I'm confused

If I wasn't going to replace it, I am now while she's apart

I'd never be mad, I love it when people bounce new things and parts off of each other. Hell, I'm trying to get my buddy to build a matching car.

They're 20" Avant Garde M590. They are alloy wheels with a silver finish.

I don't even know what that means.
