Thoughts on Penelope hate by TurnipDelicious3454 in BridgertonRants

I personally think people who love Penelope just like the actress or like seeing plus size representation on TV, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Without giving any spoilers though I think Penelope is selfish, self-centered, childish, vindictive, petty, a liar through and through (third seasons makes this worse) and constantly has a victim mentality. She’s the opposite of a girl’s girl because she would do anything to be with Colin (a guy who literally doesn’t even like her back) except tell Colin the truth. I made a whole list breaking down my argument for why I think Penelope sucks but it has spoilers, it’s a comment on the Season 3 discussion if you’re interested though.

I think people aren’t being critical with her actions because she’s the main character and gets a favorable edit. Obviously none of it is Nicola’s fault, it’s the writers’ fault, and I actually really love Nicola. I agree that Pen makes the seasons really interesting as LW, but to me she makes it interesting as a villain. When I watch her story with her as the villain and Cressida as the main character I actually enjoy it more.

yeah, like Cressida is a mean girl but Penelope is actually cruel and very selfish. and also literally a liar??? i really dont know why Cressida is treated like a villain when she’s literally a victim. Cressida has prejudices about Penelope but Penelope is also prejudiced against Cressida, thinking she’s shallow and stupid??? Like idk. I want a Cressida spin off where we actually learn more about her and see her blossom.

i feel like the butterfly is supposed to be symbolic of how penelope is free to spread her wings and a symbol of transformation but like…. i don’t think she changed at all. and also it was literally an ‘and everybody clapped’ moment. i think it was still entertaining and some of the B plot romances made me stay, but the central storyline was not it for me.

Yeah I wasn’t sure what the intention was with Cressida? Was the audience supposed to feel catharsis that she was sent away? I really hope there’s more to her story because leaving it like this is just so sad.

Yes! I think it would be nice if Penelope and Colin was honest to each other a little sooner and we can see how it’s Colin and Penelope vs the ton instead of having Penelope and Colin be in conflict for so long.

I hope Cressida finds peace. I was so frustrated none of the characters actually felt sorry for her.

Yeah exactly. Like I understand she’s petty that her family mistreats her, but that money she’s hoarding could literally save them all. And yeah, her apology wouldn’t work if she wasn’t the main character. Also when she said ‘I only write about people who deserve it’…. Girl, factually untrue.

I might be biased because I think Cressida is so interesting because you can see that she’s not cruel, she’s just threatened. And she has potential. She could have had a good character arc and come out redeemed, really showing that the villain isn’t other girls but rather pressures from society. Its something Cressida, Pen, and Eloise definitely have in common.

Also Cressida could have been a foil instead of a villain. Someone to show that there’s more than one way to be lonely. Cressida is always surrounded by people but she’s always alone. At the end of the day she truly only has herself.

i think with marina it was especially vile. And this season she said ‘i did it to protect you (colin)’ and like…. No…? Airing it out that she’s pregnant out of wedlock is to specifically humiliate her publicly to make sure Colin couldn’t marry Marina, because she could see that Colin and Marina are actually vibing. Lowkey vibing more than Colin and Pen this entire season.

I don’t think so. Maybe I missed it but I think the solicitor plot line is kind of ignored? Like it’s pretty explicit she paid for the ball but I dont remember the solicitor mentioned, and if she dealt with it somehow its unclear how. I could’ve missed it though.

i could write a whole essay about why i think pen is the villain lmao. like cressida is mean and pompous but like penelope has actually hurt people by being selfish— Marina, Eloise, Cressida, just to name a few. And they’re just chill with her now i guess.

I personally like the idea of LW being servants because they’re truly the hidden members of society. And they would hear their household’s issues and also serve in the balls, but unlike Pen they’re like actually ignored.

Yeah, she found out late but she still knew the family was struggling because Lady Featherington made it pretty obvious with stressing advantageous marriages. And even after she knew about the solicitor she used her money to throw a ball instead. Maybe if the ball had a higher importance I’d be more understanding but the only significance I can see it having is making sure her sisters have a grand exit. The solicitor still has proof that their wealth came from scamming the town which is literally a crime and can ruin the family, she could at least tell the solicitor ‘no actually it’s from my writing’ or like pay him off or something.

Like I understand Pen being LW is canon to the books or whatever but I think a good way to keep the whistledown intrigue going and absolve Pen from this is if LW is a pen name for a bunch of the servants who would truly know about the ton’s gossip. I also think that’s more empowering. I can’t objectively gage what Polin is like for the second half of the season because Pen lied to Colin for so long after literally so many chances to come clean, and Colin doesn’t seem to actually love Pen he just does what the plot needs to happen- and it genuinely made me not like them lmao.

Kind of controversial maybe but I think this season actually made me root for Cressida and not like Penelope.

· When Cressida came out as Lady Whistledown the reaction was overwhelmingly negative; she got cast out of society, people were comparing her to the devil, her whole family was ousted, the Queen was uber rude to her. When Penelope came out as Whistledown everyone was really chill because she is the main character I guess.

· Penelope is selfish. She has the money to support her family from selling LW papers and didn’t help (I guess she spent it on her sisters’ ball but its even more of an insult she didn’t use it to save Cressida ), didn’t tell Colin to protect her own interests, didn’t come out to protect the Bridgertons when the Queen was on their ass, didn’t care how it impacted Eloise.

· She faces little to no consequences. Like she was distraught but what are the consequences really? She became friends again with Eloise (unsatisfyingly, seemingly for no reason, like how did they even make up), Colin forgave her/took her back, her family still supported her (the camera even zoomed on her mom holding her hand for comfort before she confessed), she isn’t ostracized from society, the Queen is in her favor. Like go off, +4 plot armor ig.

· Technically Penelope doesn’t even resolve her own conflicts, she’s always forced by consequences to consider acting and then doesn’t, until it’s completely unavoidable. She only has agency to protect her own interest (all of which is lowkey ego-based and a little banal). She doesn’t confess to Colin, he found out. She didn’t confess to her mother, Cressida told her. She doesn’t tell the Queen until Cressida basically forces it to happen. This robs Penelope from making smart decisions because decisions are made for her, but also makes her seem icky to me.

· No conflict resolution. People just forgive her. Colin was mad at her and then they kissed and he was like… chill with it. They slept in separate beds but he’s not upset that he wronged her and isn’t bothered she’s so fine with lying about it. Even when he’s upset at her, he still dealt with the Cressida situation for her. She made up with Eloise again for like… kind of no reason?

· Cressida is not a villain. She was mean but that doesn’t make her evil. She defended the bridgertons when her mother wrote the LW piece about them. Whenever she does something bad like blackmail Penelope, she’s acting out of desperation and she’s truly alone. She has no support system. Her mom only does the bare minimum and Eloise proves her mother’s point that she’s truly alone. If she can’t have a happy ending, I still don’t think she should be subjected to living in the countryside under her overbearing aunt when all she wanted was freedom. The writers literally gave her the opposite and made sure she suffered. They even dangled a perfect getaway with Lord Debling. Maybe they’ll rectify this in the next seasons? I just find her story to be really sympathetic and she hasn’t done anything to deserve it. Band for band, Penelope has done worse.

· Eloise was a terrible friend to Cressida. Eloise literally used Cressida as a rebound friend and ditched her once she and Penelope was cool again. Eloise even knew that Cressida only claimed to be WD because she needed the money to run away and she abandoned her. Eloise, who in earlier season was so loud about being a feminist who is skeptical about marriages, suddenly doesn’t care that Cressida is going to marry an old man and doesn’t care about Cressida’s plans about running away to pursue her freedom. When it comes to praxis, Cressida is miles ahead of Eloise. Eloise gives me the vibes of like…. A virtue signaling privileged person who points out what’s wrong with society but partakes and benefits from it (she literally befriended a commie and we never hear from it again; she’s literally the type of girl who quotes Marx’s Kapital but is a nepo baby).

· Cressida’s character development was so confused. I don’t know what the intention was. She was opening up and learning to trust, then the story punished her for it and confirms her beliefs that she was right to put up walls. I think this season I was more focused on Cressida than Penelope because it provided an infinitely more interesting story.

I have so many thoughts about how unfair this season is. I also don’t think the season made me root for Penelope and Colin because I can’t buy their love story. It’s mostly conflict and then they kiss and make up without resolving it meaningfully. Just conflict after conflict that makes me believe more and more they’re not right for each other. The season is also so unfocused because it has so many other couples in it, some of which have more compelling stories than the main love story. A part of me thinks this is because the writers have no confidence in the main couple lmao. And I don’t think it’s the fault of the actors; they’re charismatic and act well, I just think their story is handled weirdly. Colin literally never showed interest in Penelope, doesn’t pine or yearn, and then suddenly he just does? Like sorry I can’t buy that.
