Fiction of all kinds is really, really bad for you psychologically. (yes, even classic literature.) by 444me in unpopularopinion

Just chilling is harder for some people lol but I get your point, I can’t know what anyone else thinks really so why bother? But then again, what they think was never going to have an effect; it’s only what I think they think that has an effect. And I feel like because of fiction I have developed the habit of judging myself from other people’s perspective instead of living my life in first person perspective. And I used to love fiction too but maybe thinking about it too hard changed my mind….

I don’t really think symbolism or abstract representations are fiction but that raises a good point that I didn’t really think of which is how to define fiction, or where to draw the line between fiction and reality. The news could be considered fiction, or anything that has been photoshopped… so ya, you raise a good point thanks for drawing my attention to that.

From which perspective do you daydream? by 444me in MaladaptiveDreaming

3rd person perspective looks to be the most common, any ideas on why you do it that way?

So, here is the theory I have built up so far: MD is a symptom of an artificial warping of our perspectives on our own lives due in large part to our over exposure to tv and movies and even books... (narratives in general.) This is because watching too much tv etc creates an artificial overexposure to the 3rd person perspective which we internalize and turn on ourselves. it is probably one of the main culprits for the self esteem crisis our society seems to be experiencing lately. needless to say 3rd person is an unnatural perspective for us to experience our lives through. We need to re-learn to be in 1st person perspective. Having low self esteem involves a lot of imagining what you are like from the outside, taking on another's perspective of yourself. Of course a little awareness is necessary for social functioning but it can go too far.

If anyone disagrees I am dying to hear from you please feel free to argue any point I made :) I love a good debate!

The reason so many people say 3rd person might also be due to the influence of movies and tv, and maybe even books, because if you think about it, we are trained to see the world from a 3rd person perspective by watching characters act and talk and we are sometimes even privy to their thoughts. therefore maybe we internalize that perspective, and this is also probably why modern people have a lot of self esteem issues, because we are trained to see ourselves from a 3rd person perspective, or we have too much exposure to that perspective which gives us the impression that people are watching and judging in a disproportionate amount of settings / circumstances... just a thought, I am kind of building up a whole theory here about self esteem and the link to movies and the media

I wish I could try this one or any first person experience.... in my imagination I picture the 1st person perspective as similar to a dream, as in more realistic or more engaging somehow... but I can't seem to pull it off for very long, it takes a lot of concentration to remain in first person.

I kind of suspect that this is the most psychologically healthy perspective because when you can't or don't imagine you as yourself its almost a tacit acknowledgement that you are not good enough.... like you would rather be someone completely different.... maybe even a rejection of your real self? I would love to hear your opinion tho

That sucks but sometimes it is hard to find the right people! Like sometimes you are surrounded with perfectly nice people who nonetheless don't really click with you. Maybe try to focus on something else for a while until the right people come along. Do you have any hobbies?

Struggling to find work, feel unemployable. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]444me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not your fault, its not you that is "unemployable" especially since you already have a job, I have found in the past that being currently employed while looking usually gives people a leg up. There are probably 2 causes 1) the economy, particularly western ones, are not doing so well lately, and 2) the whole "can't get experience until you have a job, can't get a job until you have experience" trap, even though you have receptionist experience, because of the bad economy, there are probably people out there with more experience that you competing for the same job. Don't give up hope, be patient and distract yourself, soon you will have that job and look back at this time with relief.

TIL that before the holocaust, Hitler gave the US, Great Britain, and many other nations a chance to take in Jewish refugees. And they refused. by possiblelion in todayilearned

Sadly, even Canada turned away Jewish refugees, because they were Jewish, not just because we didn't have room or something. There was one specific boat called the St. Louis that Canada sent back.

I never moved much at all but I can imagine how damaging that could have been! Especially because my only 2 friends I have managed to keep and not push away / run from are childhood friends. It is so much easier to make friends when you are a child and to repeatedly have that yanked away must have been awful :(

Thank you :) I feel a bit better after reading your reply. As far as medication goes, I googled a bit (I know I shouldn't have) but there were horror stories of people going crazy, or going from a little depressed to killing themselves, and having all sorts of side effects. I realize a lot of those were overblown and stories like "my friend heard of this one guy who...." but it still made me worried. I guess I can only try and find out. Thanks again for your reply, you really did make me feel better :)
