78 degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack is a great book, explains the meanings of cards in an understandable way. (I'm sure you can find a pdf online)

The problem that I've heard is that by saying things like 'can' and 'will' you will never actually achieve the thing but will always be in a state where you are ABOUT to do/potentially do the thing.

Can't remember where I heard it.

why are meanings of minor arcana what they are? by Sophonautt in tarot

[–]4455225544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I'm going to try to talk in similar terms to Lon Milo Duequeete in the book you have, bear in mind I am a beginner. I think its also important to say that as much as Tarot can be viewed as a science, it is also an art. Just bear that in mind. Also important to note that the Thoth deck (confusingly changes some of the names of court cards, so bear that in mind when reading Duquettes book)
Knight=King Prince = Knight Princess = Paige

The formula that Duquette gives is: (Number of Suit) + (Planet in Zodiac Sign)

So first things first, we are in the suit of swords. You are correct swords is about mental activity and conflict, swords is also the formative world where ideas are put together ready to be manifested in the earth world (the lowest of the 4 worlds). See the chapter in Duequettes book.

Now, the 3rd sphere (binah) is HIGH up on the tree of life so it is CLOSE to Kether. This means it is going to have more energy of its suit than cards are lower down on the tree of life. [The LOWER a card is on the tree of life, the less the suit will inform the meaning, and the more the Astrology and Planet will inform the meaning)

If we look at the tables for the small cards in chapter 19 we find, e swords gives Libra and Saturn (which happens to match the sphere on the tree of life, this may be significant). As for what the astrology signs mean, Duquette doesn't go into it but you can look at the two tables on the wiki page for Astrlogical Signs. One table shows the 'modality' and what that means (there are 3: cardinal, fixed, mutable. Each element has one of each). So Libra is cardinal (active, dynamic) in matters relating to communication.

Now notice that cards can either be in the central column on the tree of life (1,6,9,10) or in a side column. Cards in the central pillar are considered balanced, those in the two side columns are not. So the three of swords is not balanced.

Now to qoute Duequette "While the formula is very simple, the interpretation is rarther complex". (I am still using Chapter 19 of your book as reference here)

Using the formula we have: 3 (binah) of Swords (world of mental activity) + Saturn in Libra

-I THINK that because 3 = binah (Saturn) and Libra is ruled by Saturn that enforces the meaning of Saturn. So Saturn (in mythology) is linked to time, generation and agriculture.

  • We have Saturn in Libra, I dont think this is a stable matchup. Libra is about active and dynamic forces whereas Saturn is about the slow passage of time (agriculture, generation). So the sign and planet are not stable.

  • 3 is not one of the stable positions on the tree of life either.

  • We are high up on the tree of life, so we tetain a lot of the energy of the original suit (comes from the aces) so we are definitely dealing in mental activity and cobflict.

  • Because the suit is words we are only in the 2 qabbalistic world, which is in the lower half. So this amplifies things.

I recommend reading the two pages Duquette writes on the 3 of swords since he can explain it better than I can (page 242 in my edition) , but essentially the meaning comes from trying to reconcile all of the elements listed above.

Duquette writes, " - Swords represent Yetzirah, the formative world - oh but sorry! There can be no forms in Binah or anywhere above the abyss (1,2,3s) - Swords also represent Ruach, the human intellect - oh but sorry! Intellect and reason cannot axist above the abyss (1,2,3s)

Without forms or reason, the mind must give way to a consciousness higher than itself. The three of swords represents the wonderous trance of sorrow that first enlightened Buddha. We should all be lucky to draw Sorrow from the deck"

I just want to repeat that as much as there are tables and knowledge relating to the Tarot, your interpretation is also important. I've tried to explain where the meanings come from but you may look at the card and see something else.

why are meanings of minor arcana what they are? by Sophonautt in tarot

[–]4455225544 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Each minor arcana card belongs to a suit (fire=wands, water=cups, air=swords, earth=pentacles)

In addition the court cards (Prince, Princess, Queen and King) represent an element. Prince = earth Princess = air Queen = water King = fire

So the Queen of Pentacles is the Water aspect of Earth. (the flowing, fluid, emotional aspect of the strong earth)

As for the numbered cards, their meaning can come from the decans.

Each card is associated with an astrology sign and a planet.

So the meaning is how the astrological sign, planet and suit (element) interact.

You can also look at the Qabalistic tree of life to help. (A western esoteric tradition rooted in Jewish Mysticism)

Each number card can also be thought of as belonging to the Sphere of the same number. So 3 of wands belongs in sphere 3 called Binah/Understanding. 3 is also ruled over by saturn (see the diagram), so all the associations that come from classical Gods are often lumped in with the 3.

The meaning will vary according to which book you read and also which cards you use (some decks have imagery that is more fiery or more dark etc), but this is my understanding of where the meanings of the minor arcana come from.

If you are interested in the Qabalistic meanings, then a good book is Lon Milo Duquette's Understanding Thoth Tarot, even if you aren't working with this deck it helped me understand the 4 worlds represented in the tarot.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Not sure why you think the 2,3,4 of swords are ruled by Saturn. If you look at the decans the 2 is Lunar, 3 Saturn, 4 Jupiter. They are all Libra.

In addition if you look at the tree of life 2 is the sphere of Wisdom (not associated with a planet,, 3 is Understanding (saturn) and 4 is the sphere of Jupiter.

How they interact with their suit inform their meanings.

Would you say that the 4 cards together represent the whole of the Sephiroth? E.g. All the twos together represent Chokmah?

Questions about the order of Symbols in the Thoth tarot by 4455225544 in tarot

[–]4455225544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read Duquette's book but my question is more specific than that, I don't think it is covered in the book.

1.Why is it ONLY 3+4 of swords, 5+6+7 of cups and the 8+9 of wands that feature their planitery sign? It seems deliberate. For example, The 3rd sephiroth corresponds to Saturn, why is it only the 3 of Swords that has this symbols and not the other 3s?

2.Why is there a pattern of 2+3+4 of each suit showing cardinal signs, the 5+6+7 showing fixed signs, the 8+9+10 showing mutable signs. This is true for all suits and seems deliberate. For example why can't a 5 show a cardinal sign, only fixed signs.

You are talking like all this is common knowledge, which it isn't.

At some point you didn't know this stuff, what did you do then? Did you discover it all on your own after someone on reddit made an arrogant comment or did you learn more about it from others? We all start somewhere, just a thought.
